THIMA President’s Message
Wow! It’s August already! The summer months are my most favorite time of the year. With less than two months until the long awaited implementation of ICD-10 I want to first share what great success there has been with our grassroots advocacy for ICD-10. There have been over 87,000 tweets, 34,000 letters sent to legislators, and 6,000 Facebook alerts in support of ICD-10 October 1, 2015 implementation date! With less than two months to go we want to continue our advocacy efforts and be a resource to physicians, clinicians, and legislators to ensure preparedness for ICD-10.
As you know our professional organization is hugely successful because of our many volunteers. One specific group of THIMA volunteers that has been hard at work already is the THIMA Program Committee. The program committee members volunteer their time to plan the THIMA Annual Meeting. As I am sure you can imagine, planning our annual meeting takes a lot of time, dedication, and hard work. The THIMA Program Committee met July 23 and 24 in Nashville to work on the agenda for the 66th THIMA Annual meeting scheduled for March 9 -11, 2016 at Embassy Suites Cool Springs in Franklin, Tennessee. I want to thank the THIMA Program Committee members, Seth Johnson, Chair, April Insco, Co-Chair, Diane Bobrowski, Jamie Glenn, Amanda King, Diane Ward, and Alisha Smith, who volunteered their time to attend the two day planning meeting. This is an annual meeting you will not want to miss!
I also want to thank the THIMA board members, Rebecca Boyd, KAHIMA President, April Insco, METHIMA President, Lisa Justice, UETHIMA President-Elect, Rolanda McHaney, WTHIMA President-Elect, Tiffany Nation, CAHIMA President, Lela McFerrin, 1st Year THIMA Past President, Alisha Smith, THIOMA President-Elect, Tony Taylor, 2nd Year THIMA Past President, and Wanda McKnight, THIMA Executive Director who volunteered their time to attend the THIMA board meeting that was held in Nashville on July 24.
Your vote is needed! AHIMA election will be open for voting August 3 – 17, 2015. Please take a moment of your time and visit iVote.ahima.org and vote! We are counting on you to make your vote count!
The THIMA Board sends our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Jean Emerson who lost her courageous battle with cancer and to our dear friend and colleague, Beth Bowman, who lost her beloved husband, Peter, on July 31st.

Oppose Dual Coding
Tell Congress to Say No to HR 3018
Take Action!
On July 10, 2015 Representatives Blackburn and Price introduced HR 3018, the Code Flex Act of 2015. This bill would allow for dual coding in ICD-9 and ICD-10 beginning on October 1, 2015.
Contact your Members of Congress and oppose this bill.

CMS Clarifies ICD-10 Statement
The CMS has clarified a statement released with the American Medical Association on ICD-10 flexibility.
The agency said the transition to the new codes will not be delayed, but claims with valid diagnosis codes from the right family of codes will not be denied based on poor specificity alone in the initial year of ICD-10.
