Lean on Friends

This week during a dinner with girlfriends, my friend Amy shared her angst about leaving her five-month-old daughter home with her husband while she went to Africa to visit the set of a film being made about her late brother. Almost every woman at the dinner responded with a tale of leaving her own baby for a business or personal trip in the first year of their child’s life. London, Israel, India…so many stories of successes to share with Amy.

Guilt ridden over the possibility of leaving her daughter, Amy had then rationalized going all the way to Africa for just three days on the ground
- a decision that wouldn’t benefit anyone. By the end of dinner, Amy was ready to book a week-long trip to Africa. She was doing it for herself, for her mom, and for her brother. And she left dinner a whole lot lighter.

Sometimes we need permission from the outside to feel good about our decisions on the inside. And we all need a community to turn to for support when we need it.

This is why we all need good friends. Invest in your friends, support your friends and never be too busy to make a new friend.
