Best 3 films of summer 2015

By Katie Parkes

3. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

A blistering red earth, bunches of leather-clad bikers, crazy metal heads and a stony-eyed avenging protagonist working to keep evil at bay – these are the familiar traits of director George Miller’s “Mad Max” universe. Miller’s fourth instalment fired up the box office earlier this summer, not only depicting a tightly woven stream of conflicts with evildoers, but more importantly, Mad Max: Fury Road delivers a rare alternative to aggressively simplified action movies.

2. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

This year’s big winner at Sundance certainly lives up to the hype. If you’ve seen anything from My Girl to The Fault in Our Stars, coming-of-age stories wrapped in a death narrative might not sound overwhelmingly original. But trust me, this film is a new twist on that old trope. Crafted with an uncommon delicacy and all the feelings, these three talented young actors will take you on a journey of laughter and tears, setting you up for an hour and 45 minute emotional battle.

1. Inside Out (2015)

They’ve done it again! The geniuses at Pixar have set their newest film in the most remarkable location imaginable: the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley. Thanks to an incredible voice cast and stellar storytelling, we learn that Riley’s brain is home to a slew of emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, Disgust) that teach us to experience all emotions, good and bad, because it makes us who we are. Clever, hilarious and relatable at any age, Pixar does a fantastic job of articulating how bumpy growing up can be.
