We are delighted to be a recipient of the Creative New Zealand Kahikatea Investment Programme securing our Professional Development Programmes for 2016 and 2017, a contribution to infrastructure costs for our advocacy work and some funding towards some regional activities. You can read more about it below.
Following the AGM, there has been a change of boundaries for the regions from which the National Council delegates are drawn. This caused an election process in the newly formed Northern Districts region. Now that that election is over and Tui Allen was voted in as their regional delegate we have a complete National Council. You can read about your National Council here.
The above link is to our old website. We are uploading information to our new website and testing it right now. In the coming months it will be launched and members will have the opportunity to refresh their profiles or create a new one. If you are considering updating your profile, hold off for a few weeks as the new ones are easier to manage and better looking!

NZSA part of Creative NZ Toi Uru Kahikatea Investment Programme for 2016 & 2017
Creative New Zealand announces 2015 investment funding
Media release from Creative NZ 31 July
The Arts Council has committed a further $10.5 million to 26 arts organisations in its latest multi-year investment funding round.
Arts Council Chairman, Dr Dick Grant says the Toi Uru Kahikatea (Arts Development) and Toi Tōtara Haemata (Arts Leadership) investment programmes were established in 2012 to ensure New Zealand’s arts infrastructure was intentionally strengthened and enriched. “These programmes provide funding for between one and five years and account for more than half of Creative New Zealand’s funding of the arts.”
He says, “We are looking for a very deliberate and complementary mix; leadership organisations that fill key roles in our arts ecology and development organisations that foster diversity and exploration. I believe we are getting the balance right. Internationally and at home our arts offering demonstrates both quality and vibrancy.” More

Position Vacant: CLNZ Writer Board Member
Copyright Licensing New Zealand (CLNZ) is jointly owned by the New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) and the Publishers Association of New Zealand (PANZ).
The Board comprises 6 Directors – 2 appointed by NZSA. This appointment process is being undertaken by NZSA, in consultation with CLNZ, to find a suitable candidate from within our membership to replace a current director whose term on the Board is due to end in December 2015. The new appointee will attend their first CLNZ Board meeting in February 2016, having completed an induction process prior to that date. The appointment will be for a three year term with the potential for a second 3 year term. There are five board meetings and one planning meeting each year, held in Auckland. If the new appointee lives outside of Auckland travel and accommodation expenses are covered. The appointee will receive a per annum fee of $7,864 adjusted at the beginning of each calendar year by CPI.

NZSA Lilian Ida Smith Award
Now open for applications!
The $3,000 award is to assist writers of non-fiction, fiction, poetry, comic / graphic novels and drama for adults and children. Applicants need to be aged 35 years and over, working towards completion of a specific project, and members of the NZSA.
Applicants are expected to be either in the early stages of their writing career, or someone for whom opportunities to fulfill their potential have been limited.
The Lilian Ida Smith Award is offered by NZSA thanks to a bequest from Lilian Ida Smith, a music teacher of Wanganui who had a keen interest in the arts. Lilian left part of her legacy to the NZSA to 'assist people aged 35yrs and over to embark upon or further a literary career'.

The NZSA Peter & Dianne Beatson Fellowship seeks applications from writers of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama who are members of the NZ Society of Authors and who are currently working on a new project.
This annual Fellowship is generously donated by Peter Beatson and provides the successful applicant with a stipend of $7,000. More

NZSA / Auckland Museum Research Grants
Opens for Applications on Monday 3 August
The Auckland Museum and NZ Society of Authors are once again delighted to offer two RESEARCH grants for writers who want to utilise the considerable facilities and resources of the Auckland Museum Library in the development of their fiction or non-fiction manuscript.
This year’s grants comprise of:
- One National Grant of $4,000 (supplemented by the option of 4 weeks funded accommodation at the Michael King Writers Centre in Auckland in addition to the stipend).
- One Auckland Regional Grant of $2,500 for local writers.
Applicants for both grants need to be members of the NZ Society of Authors. The deadline for applications is 5pm, 5 October 2015.

A donation scam has been circulating among NZ authors, indicating that there is an ongoing fundraiser with the goal of auctioning off your donated goods to provide new sports equipment and other programs to underprivileged kids at local schools. Be watchful for emails from either gskokandich@gmail.com or judith.bennett2015@gmail.com, as these are the addresses known to be associated with the scam.

NZ Bookshops benefit from James Patterson bookshop grant
These grants were secured thanks to their inspired ideas to get children reading.
Wardini Books in Havelock North will be instigating a trading card scheme. Children will be rewarded with trading cards for a variety of ‘events’ including finishing their first chapter book, completing a series, writing a book review or attending a book club. Hedleys Bookshop in Masterton will use their grant to employ a dynamic Children’s Book Ambassador to connect with children throughout the community via their local school. Congratulations to Anna Smaill! - Man Booker Prize Long-listed
New Zealand poet and novelist Anna Smaill, who is heading to Christchurch for WORD Christchurch's Shifting Points of View programme in the Christchurch Arts Festival, has just been long-listed for the Man Booker prize for her superb novel The Chimes.
The novel is set in a dystopian future where music has replaced the written word, and people's memories are wiped every evening. It is written using exquisite language and tense plotting. More

Writing War
A residential workshop for writers
New Zealanders at War: Writing War will cover all aspects of writing about war: research, the resources available, the ethics and the issues. With leading writers of New Zealand history, it will include sessions on writing military history, social history, the experience of Māori and Pacific Island people, war in fiction, drama and art, writing about war for children, and writing about the things we might prefer to forget.
Speakers include leading international military historian Chris Pugsley, Damien Fenton from Massey University, Gavin McLean from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, historian and archaeologist David Veart, Puawai Cairns from Te Papa, art historian and author Jenny Haworth, oral historian and author Megan Hutching, peace activist and author Maire Leadbetter, social historian Te Awhina Arahanga and publishers.

ATENA FARGHADANI has just been sentenced for, in effect, drawing Iranian leaders as monkeys and cows. Given the absurd ruling, perhaps she should have drawn the rule of draconian law, and her legal proceedings, as a kangaroo court instead.
Farghadani, a 28-year-old Iranian artist and activist, rendered visual judgment last year, lampooning members of her nation’s parliament over their vote to restrict contraception and ban certain birth-control methods — just one of her works satirizing the government. More

Festival of words and ideas returns to Raglan
Word Café Raglan is set to brighten the end of winter for Raglan residents and visitors, with a stellar line-up of New Zealand writers, illustrators, photographers and other book-related people.
To be held at the Raglan Town Hall from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 August 2015, the festival aims to celebrate and foster local talent, alongside bringing top authors and illustrators from further afield into the town.
Highlights of the festival will include recipient of the 2014 Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship Mandy Hager; true crime writer and well-known TV presenter Scott Bainbridge; popular children’s author Dawn McMillan; and editor of Arrival travel magazine Latesha Randall.
Saturday night’s keynote speaker is James George, who as well as being an award-winning author and creative writing teacher, is the current chairperson of the writers committee of Toi Māori Aotearoa – Māori Arts New Zealand.
Weekend passes are now available at the early-bird price of $70. Tickets to individual sessions are also available.

PEN Matters
Te Reo Māori: PEN Declaration on Linguistic Diversity
As Māori language week draws to a close, it is time to reconsider our commitment to Te Reo Māori. Since 1978 PEN has advocated strongly in favour of linguistic diversity, playing a leading role in the creation of the Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights (1996). The Declaration, which proclaims equality of linguistic rights, considers collective and individual dimensions of linguistic rights to be inseparable.
On the 40th Anniversary of the first Māori Language Week, it is concerning to hear experts such as Dr Timoti Karetu (the first Māori Language Commissioner) and Māori Development Minister, Te Ururoa Flavell, voice concerns for the future of Te Reo Māori in this country. In 2011 PEN developed a 10 point document as a tool to defend and promote linguistic rights around the world. The Girona Manifesto states that linguistic diversity is a world heritage that must be valued and protected.
