WHO Meningitis alarm: Deaths rising in Nigeria, Niger 

With 800 deaths recorded this year alone in Nigeria and Niger, and 12,000 cases, meningitis has become the new concern of the World Health Organisation. But there is a lot to worry about: the world is short of vaccines, making WHO trigger alarm that the entire Africa is at risk of a large meningitis outbreak if production of vaccines are not scaled up.

Nigeria's Ministry of Health accuses Okonjo-Iweala of making questionable payment to Global Health NGO  

Officials of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) are questioning how former Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala handled payment of the sum of $2.2 million that was the subject of a dispute between the Health Ministry and a global non-governmental organization called the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI).

First malaria vaccine excites scientists

NIGERIAN scientists led by the President of Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), Prof. Oyewale Tomori, and National Coordinator, National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), Dr. Nnenna Ezeigwe, have hailed the world’s first malaria vaccine, which represents a major step toward prevention of a disease that kills more than half a million people worldwide every year – most of whom are children in Africa.

The road to 2020: Mobilising private sector in Nigeria's fight against malaria 

1.5 million children under-five lose their lives each year to vaccine preventable diseases, while 165 million more are left stunted by malnutrition. The international community has developed robust products and services delivery systems to confront these challenges. However, without a systematic effort to provide incentives for improved coordination of these systems, children will continue to slip through the cracks and resources will continue to be wasted on redundant programs.

Malnutrition hits Adamawa IDP camp

No fewer than 50 people, mostly children under the age of five, are suffering from malnutrition in Malkohi Internally Displaced Persons camp which is in the suburb of Yola, Adamawa state. A member of the Federal of Muslim Women Association who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES on the condition of anonymity said the situation was so dire that the association had to take food supplements in the early hours of Tuesday to affected persons in the camp.

Stroke, an emergency in Nigeria

World Health Organisation, WHO, experts along side other leading stroke experts have estimated that 6.2 million die of stroke each year. An estimated 17.3 million people died from cardiovascular diseases in 2008, representing 30 per cent of all global deaths with 7.3 million due to coronary heart disease and 6.2 million to stroke. According to experts, in Nigeria, one stroke case occurs every 40 seconds and every four minutes, someone dies of stroke. Stroke is a second leading cause of death of cardiovascular deaths worldwide.

Nigeria: Ministry honours Nigerian with 5.0 CGPA in Russian Medical University  

The Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday in Abuja honoured Dr Victor Olalusi who scored 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) in Russian National Research Medical University, Moscow (RNRMU) in 2013. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olalusi, who was the best graduating student in the whole Russian Federation in 2013, studied in RNRMU under the Russia-Nigeria Bilateral Education Agreement.

The two radio soap operas designed to increase knowledge around family planning, HIV/AIDS, adolescent reproductive health, women’s education, and gender-based violence have finally hit the airwaves in Nigeria. The programmes, which were written and produced by Population Media Center (PMC) including Tafigawalo (Working towards Change) in Pidgin, and Hannunka Mai Sanda (Power in your Hands) in Hausa, began broadcast on July 6, 2015.

In contrast, our public sector hospitals these days seem to be constantly shut as one of several groups of health professionals is almost always on strike.
