August 2015

IT'S ALMOST HERE!! TWO WEEKS UNTIL.....

VBS 2015 - Wonders, Water & Miracles

Vacation Bible School is only 2 weeks away!
August 10th, 11th, 12th (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) from 5:30-8:00pm

We already have a large number of children registered, but keep spreading the word to your family, friends, and neighbors. There is so much fun to be had! If you haven’t already registered your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc… then what are you waiting for ??… Just make sure to register by Sunday, August 2nd, so that proper planning can be done to accommodate everyone.

Attention Adults!
We haven’t forgotten about you! Even if you can’t volunteer, there is still an Adult Bible Study being led by Rev. Larry Homitsky. He won’t have water balloons though, but feel free to bring your own!

What We Still Need
The "Perfect Attendance Award" for this year is a $5.00 gift card to the Dollar Tree. Anyone who is able to, please pick up a $5.00 gift card at the Dollar Tree then place in the offering basket at church. If you are unable to make it to the store itself, please place your donation in the offering basket on Sunday and mark it "VBS". Thank you in advance if you are able to help out and donate!

We are still in need of volunteers to help out with many different tasks – setup, tear down, group leaders, meals, and much more. If you are available the evenings of Monday, August 10th thru Wednesday, August 12th we will find you something to do that suits your gifts. . If you are available to help on any or all nights, please contact Christina Kautchick or Karen Ferguson (karen.ferguson.15202@gmail.com).
Wonders, Water & Miracles
Come join in the fun while we learn about the wonders, water, and miracles of the Bible! The children will get to participate in related crafts along with physical and musical activities. They will also see plays and hear music about the stories as well. The following three stories will be featured:
  • God Delivers the Israelites  (Exodus 14:1-31)
  • God Delivers Peter  (Matthew 14:22-31a)
  • God Delivers Jonah  (Jonah 1-2)
God Delivers the Israelites
Exodus 14:1-31 - Israelites are delivered out of the hands of the Pharaoh and his army. The Israelites put their trust in the Lord and in Moses, his servant.
Verse 13 - Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.”

God Delivers Peter
Matthew 14:22-31a - Peter is delivered from drowning as he cried out ot Jesus.
Verse 30-31a - But when he saw the wind he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord save me”. Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.

God Delivers Jonah
Jonah 1-2 - Jonah runs away from God and is swallowed by a great fish and is delivered from death.
Verses 1:17 - But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the fish three days and three nights.
Verses 2:1 - And the Lord commanded the fish and it vomited Jonah on dry land.

It was another special evening at Calvary's Fourth of July Open House. We were able to spend time with friends and members of Calvary as well as neighborhood locals and visitors from the Greater Pittsburgh area as they were on their way to see the fireworks.

Calling All ... Well, Calling Everyone! ... for "Summer Pickup Choir"!

What is Summer Pickup Choir?
For the first time ever, we are trying out a summer “pick-up” choir. We will be choosing one Sunday each month during the summer to sing. All voice parts are welcome. This is a great way to check out the choir and get a feel for how we run things. We hope you join us!!

Next Sunday for Pickup Choir:

This Sunday, August 2nd

Rehearsal starts at 10:00am

Everyone is welcome!

Old Allegheny Antique Show

The Pittsburgh antique and collecting scene is about to get a lot more exciting! A new show is in town – the Old Allegheny Antique Show!  This inaugural show will be held the weekend of September 12th-13th here at Calvary. The show will bring together up to 20 dealers from Pennsylvania and Ohio specializing in a diverse assortment of fine antiques and collectibles. Whether you are looking for that perfect accent piece for your home, that missing item in your collection, or a unique gift for that someone special – this show is the place to be!  Also, immediately following the show, spend some time listening to a special recital featuring the organ and our very own Music Director Brian Burns.
Sunday School Corner is the segment of the monthly newsletter that allows everyone to see what goes on in Sunday School at Calvary: the lessons the children are learning, the bible verses they are memorizing, the activities they are participating in, and the special relationships they are forming with the other children in Calvary's congregation.

Lesson
The Forgiving Father - We discussed the story of the pig farmer and his son during which time we made name tags and cards for someone who has forgiven us. This was followed up with several puzzles to discover the day's faith message about unconditional love.

Bible Verse
You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.
- Psalm 86:5

Sunday, June 28th, 2015

We had only one young man to hear the wonderful teaching by Ellie. They had a wonderful talk about God and healing followed up with prayer.

A great comment by Galen Hardy - "God can heal everyone who believes in God."

Bible Verse
When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” So Jesus went with him.
- Mark 5:21-24

Lesson
Jesus Gives Freedom from Sin - Ezra volunteered to help show that sinful habits can become traps in our lives. As each child explained a bad habit or sin a tie was then put around Ezra. However, each child then gave an example of a good habit and they cut a tie to free him from sin. As a closing to our celebrating freedom we all made paper fireworks and blew them up in the air with straws.

Bible Verse
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
- John 8:31-32

Sunday, July 12th, 2015

Lesson
The Daughter of Jairus - As the children hear the story of Jesus bringing Jairus' daughter back to life we made a cardstock representation of his daughter. They put the puppet on their fingers as her legs. The children also had the opportunity to do a coloring page or word unscramble.

Bible Verse
..."I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live."
- John 11:25

Sunday, July 19th, 2015

Lesson
The Lord's Prayer - The children made a prayer caterpillar to help them to remember how to pray. The Lord's Prayer booklet not only gave a wonder story but several examples of when to pray. They put a praying hands sticker on each picture of when would be a good time to pray (which was all of them). They also had the opportunity to do a puzzle to discover the missing word in the day's faith message - Jesus teaches us how to pray.
