Dear Parents and Caregivers

Peter Ackers
After a pleasant break, Term 3 started with a busy first week of school with Maori Language Week, The School Science Fair and Parent – Teacher interviews.

Maori Language week was a celebration of all things te reo and Huanui College really embraced the week with challenges every day in the notices, ki o rahi at lunchtimes and kapa haka. The interclass quiz on Thursday pastoral care lesson was a lot of fun and the mufti day and assembly on Friday was a great way to end the week. I would like to thank Cathy Senescall for her hard work and enthusiasm in making the week a success and the te reo Maori classes who helped in the organisation. Can’t wait until next year – no pressure.

Also during the first week the school science fair was on in the library and I was really impressed with the work that students had done in producing their exhibits. The standard seems to get higher every year. I appreciate that this is the first Science fair for our Year 7 students and I know some parents have struggled to help their children to complete the project. It is the actual completion of a long term project that is part of the learning process for our students and is a skill that they will use later in life. Several of the exhibits have now been selected to go to Forum North for the Central Northland Science Fair. Thank you to Mr Oclee-Brown and the whole Science Department for their work in putting on the Science Fair.

The Parent-Teacher interviews were on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. These interviews were an opportunity for parents and teachers to connect and work with each other to improve the learning outcomes of our children. The interviews are short at 5 minutes each and I would encourage parents to make a further appointment with your child’s teacher if there are any unresolved issues. We continually look at improving the way we do things here at Huanui College, and if you have any feedback regarding the Parent–Teacher interviews, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would like to recognise our staff for their work at both evenings with some staff having over 100 interviews.

A recent national health and wellbeing survey provided some good news about New Zealand secondary school students. New Zealand secondary school students today, compared to their counterparts from 2001 have better family relationships, school relationships and are engaged in far less risky behaviour. They are 50% less likely to have been in a car driven by a drunk or dangerous driver, they have significantly reduced their tobacco and marijuana use and are binge drinking almost 50% less. Teen pregnancies are falling and our students are also far less likely to be a victim of physical or sexual violence. Interestingly these myth defeating statistics are following world trends and a hypothesis is developing that one reason for this maybe the increased online activity of our students. There are still concerns such as mental health concerns and the link between mental health and the above risk taking behaviours. We very much believe that school life has a part to play in ensuring the health and wellbeing of our young people and our pastoral care programme is focussed on the issues our young people face. We also have an excellent itinerant counselling service and our staff are always available for a supportive chat. The academic and sporting achievement of our students is important but our worth as a school depends on how well we treat one another and we should be judged on the well-being of our most vulnerable students.

Matthew Young has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Pacific Rim International Boys Camp in Japan and he flew out early August. The camp’s goal is to help the campers learn the importance of personal contribution in building a multinational society based on friendship. Matthew will be required to present to all the other campers and I am sure he will do a wonderful job as an ambassador for not only his school but his country as well.

Quote of the Week:

“Hurihia to aroaro ki te ra tukuna to atarangi kia taka ki muri i a koe”

“Turn your face to the sun, and the shadows fall behind you”

Career Information Afternoon a Success

At the end of Term 2 a 'Speed Career Information Afternoon' was held in the Gym. A number of parents and friends helped out and shared their expertise with our students. It was an informative and fun way to while away a Thursday afternoon learning about personal characteristics required as well as study pathways and job prospects. A range of jobs were introduced to our students which will help them to make their subject choices for 2016 as well as career choices. [Read article...]

Huanui Girls Football First XI

The Huanui Girls Football First XI team have had a fantastic season and have been successful in their bid for the 1st Division title for 2015. The team is in only its second year of competition and is made up of a group of enthusiastic and committed girls with varying years of experience.

The final against Kaitaia was played in front of a very vocal group of Huanui College students, teachers and parents. This support made a huge difference as the girls scored two goals in the last 3 minutes to win 4 -3. To make the achievement even greater was the fact our team won all 8 of their games this year, scoring 25 goals and conceding  only 7.

Thank-you to Mr. Gardiner who managed the team, Sandi Burleigh for refereeing, all the parents and in particular, our team sponsor J.D’s Jewellers.

Achievements at a Northland representative level and above are required. More information rather than less is appreciated, along with a photo of the student participating in that code if possible. Entrants came from all over the North Island to show us that having a physical and or mental handicap is not a barrier to achieving amazing things. There were swimming times achieved on the day that many able bodied competitive swimmers have yet to achieve. Huanui College students Tomas Ashford, Ben Lee-Johnson, Josie Selkirk and Leah Selkirk, all competitive swimmers themselves, were volunteer timekeepers and officials. The annual event was a really enjoyable day, with a wonderful positive vibe and lots of excitement.
