Summer Heat Is On! 2015
Summer Heat and dehydration
Striking a Balance
Staying well-hydrated is always important, but especially so in the summer months when temperatures rise and perspiration, or sweating, increases. Physical activity or exercise further increases water loss from our bodies, which we must replace. Losing too much body water can adversely affect health, causing fatigue as well as creating poor cardiovascular conditions.
General hydration tips:
- Drink enough water to prevent thirst. An easy check of hydration levels is urine color. The darker it is, the more likely you’re dehydrated.
- Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after an exercise session, especially when exercising in extreme heat.
- Anytime the temperature and humidity are both above 70 (Fahrenheit), you should sip more frequently from a water bottle.
- Remember that you can replenish fluids with fruits and veggies that contain water (e.g., watermelon, grapes, berries, tomatoes, bell peppers).
- Alcoholic beverages can lead to dehydration; for every alcoholic drink, have one non-alcoholic drink.
Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink, and don’t let the heat and humidity sap your resources. If you drink regularly throughout the day, increasing the amount as needed for your activity level and your surroundings, you’ll learn to strike a balance and remain cooler and stronger for much longer.
Enjoy the extended summer we are having!
