Charlene takes on state challenge

MWAS Scholarship Coach Charlene Watters has been rewarded for her hard work by being selected as the Western Australian State Women’s Country team coach.

Charlene coached the Geraldton women’s Country Week Team in June and is also involved with the Mid West Hockey Academy. On top of this she coaches a junior half field team, plays for the Saints A-Grade, and is President of the Geraldton Hockey Association.

Coaching a state country team comes with its challenges, one of those being the team spread out all over Western Australia. To help with this Charlene has sought advice from Central West Health and Rehabilitation to help her plan a fitness program and some recovery sessions for during the tournament.

"I'm very excited to be given this opportunity to coach at the next level after Coaching at club and county week level.” Said Watters

“It will be a great chance for me to improve and develop my coaching skills and knowledge of the game.”

“I would also like to thank MWSA for their support and advice”

There will be a couple of familiar faces in the team comes together. Mikalia Watson, MWAS athlete, and Mikala Cooper, also from Geraldton have both been selected as athletes in the team.

The State Women’s Country Team will compete in Wollongong from the 8th of August to the 15th of August.

Bronze for Aussie Polocrosse

Congratulations to Jane Cooper and her Australian teammates on their bronze at the Polocrosse World Cup in South Africa. The Australians lost to an emerging Zambia team in the semi-final and played off for third against the UK. Consistent with their third placed world ranking leading in to the tournament the Aussies conquered the Brits 25 – 19 to finish with the bronze medal. The match proved a real challenge with the UK scoring first and applying continuing pressure. World number one South Africa retained the trophy they won in 2011 and will be the target for the others to chase at the 2019 World Cup.
Surfing coach gives good vibes in CEP

Surfing coach Evan Burns is a great example of the positive achievements coming from the Coaching Effectiveness Program (CEP). Evan join the CEP in 2014 and has always looked to better himself to ensure he provides the best opportunities for Mid West athletes.

In conjunction with Todd Teakle and Marcey Wellstead from MWAS supplier Central West Health and Rehabilitation, Evan developed a surf conditioning program for young athletes. The program includes a physical assessment, core strength, flexibility, and some surf specific movement training.

“Unlike many sports that are judged on movement quality and style, such as dancing and gymnastics, surfers have limited opportunity to repetitively practice commonly completed movements. For example, how often does a surfer get a chance to land from a 1m high floater, or practice holding a rail during cutback during a surfing session?” said Burns of the often difficult task of scheduling practice sessions in good surf conditions.

“The program gives the athletes a chance to practice many of these surf specific skills, as well as sports specific strength activities. The activities include jumps, landings, medicine ball activities, balance activities and full body rotations. This is coupled with time spent on surf specific equipment such as indo boards and streetboardz.”

Recently Evan has also assisted Exmouth surfer Cassia Haegele who is part of the Gascoyne Project. The project is funded by the Department of Sport and Recreation and is a pilot for providing services to more remote regions. Cassia was recently in Geraldton and worked with Evan on the technical and tactical components of her surfing.

Professional development for Evan includes the Level 2 Surf Coaching accreditation and in August 2015, Evan will complete the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association level one qualification. Well done Evan and may the good waves keep rolling in to the Mid West.

Six Squash State Titles
The recent WA Squash state championships were once again a happy hunting ground for MWAS athlete Jack Osborn. Jack picked up his sixth age group state title in a row, winning the Boys U15 title and showed he is maturing as a player at a more rapid rate than his birthdays come around. This title was just reward for the hard work and determination Jack has shown to his training. That hard work will be called upon again as Jack was selected to the WA State Junior Squash team heading to the national championships in Cairns during late September

Another young Mid West athlete selected for the WA State Junior Squash team was Anita Tsangaris from Exmouth. Anita recently took up the opportunity to be part of the Gascoyne Project, an initiative supported by the Department of Sport and Recreation and the MWAS to trial providing support for athletes in the further reaches of the region.
