Welcome to our regular monthly update on our projects and progress, designed to give our supporters an insight into some of the things we're working on and how you might be able to help. Please feel free to share it with anyone you think might be interested in hearing more about what Good Thinking is currently working on.

Good Thinking Investigates: Palmistry

Palm readers have operated in seaside towns across the country for many years, with many people putting their trust in the readings the receive – especially in times of need.

In the absence of any proof that palmists have any ability to accurately advise on the future, we decided to visit to a palm reader in Blackpool to find out whether that trust was well-placed. Our three-part undercover investigation series begins by showing just how many questions get asked by the palm reader (not the sitter!) during a single £30 reading...

It became quickly apparent to us that we were being asked far more questions than we were being given answers, and much of the information we were given was generic and unremarkable. With this in mind, we decided to partner with the Merseyside Skeptics Society and return to our psychic to put her accuracy to the test.

In part two of the series, we presented our psychic with sitters who had real health issues, and fictional gambling issues - both of whom received highly dangerous advice, showing just how much harm readings like these can do to vulnerable people.

In the unmissable final part of the series we compare the language used across all of our readings, and uncover an interesting and quite damning pattern...

Our investigation neatly illustrates why it's always important to be skeptical about the claims of palm readers, psychics and others who claim to be able to predict the future.

In other Good Thinking news this month:
"All NHS trusts should stop funding homeopathic treatments"
Having discovered that four more NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups have ceased funding homeopathic services, we published an article for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's 'The Pharmaceutical Journal' calling on other NHS CCGs to follow suit. Elsewhere, Professor Jayne Lawrence, Chief Scientists to the RPS, has called for pharmacists to stop selling homeopathy.
