Sunny August

Fresh Savory & Kohlrabi in Share #8

Hey Food Friends,
Hooray for sunshine! It has been amazing to see everything start to ripen with the warmer weather. We are optimistic that our summer crops will make themselves known this month. Hopefully there will be snap and shelling peas (pictured above) making appearance soon, plus zucchini and cukes. Lots of things planted, just waiting to ripen all at once!

Savory characters...

This week's new herb is fresh savory. We often see it dried, and while you can easily lay it out in a basket or tray to dry, having it fresh is a revelation. When fresh it's very pungent, with a peppery taste that blends well with other herbs. This link with notes and recipes from "Old Fashioned Living" recommends it with several kinds of bean dishes:

Speaking of fishcakes, were so excited to visit our friends at Roots Country Farm farm in Bay Roberts last weekend. We spent the day cod fishing and chatting CSA & the weather. So fantastic to support more young and new farmers in our little scene, and what a treat to be out on the water for the food fishery.

We also have a taste of kohlrabi in the share this week. It's that green hulk poking leaves out of the share bags.. the main part eaten is the peeled stem, though as with most everything in the brassica family - you can eat every part. These can be eaten raw or lightly steamed - stirfry is a good option too.

There are plenty of leafy greens in the share -- everyone gets a head of lettuce, plus salad mix for the large shares. Swiss chard featured in a beautiful quiche made by Judy today - perfect thing in the shade during harvest day! Beet thinnnings are very similar to chard and can be used interchangeably, leave the roots on & trimmed to 2 inches or so for some extra sweetness and crunch.

Read on for your share list below & thank you for eating with us!
Nadya & Sarah
In the LARGE share:
Cabbage - Big green round or pointy (that variety is "caraflex")
Beet thinnings
Kohlrabi, 2 regular sized. just peel & eat, delicious crisp bites with salt & the greens are good roughage too
Savory
Swiss Chard
Head Lettuce - Super tender butterhead type, either red or green
Salad Mix - with lettuce & mustard greens
In the SMALL share:
Broccoli Florets OR Sugar Snap Peas- the lucky first taste!
Kohlrabi, 1 big or two minis - just peel & eat, delicious crisp bites with salt & the greens are good roughage too
Savory
Swiss Chard
Head Lettuce - Green curly leaf or butterhead
As usual, everything in your share is "farm fresh" so please give it a little wash before you enjoy! Doing it all on the first evening keeps there from being a scary unopened bag hiding out in the back of the fridge. But, your greens should last a long time in plastic. Blanching & freezing greens like Swiss chard when they are abundant now will be a real treat in February!
