MEMBER NEWS

OALA Member, Marta Mulkins, Royal Canadian Navy Commodore, Becomes Commander of Canada's Naval Reserves

On July 9, Commodore Marta Mulkins officially assumed command of the reserve component of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) from Commodore David Craig during a change of command ceremony at the Naval Officer Training Centre Venture, in Esquimalt, British Columbia. The Ceremony was presided over by Rear-Admiral Bill Truelove, Commander Martitime Forces Pacific.

In her 30 years of service as a Naval reservist, Commodore Marta Mulkins was the first Canadian woman to command a Maritime Coastal Defense Vessel, serving as the Commanding Officer of Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Kingston, as well as Naval Reserve Division HMCS Carleton. She also deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan, for a six-month tour with Operation ARGUS, the Canadian Forces' Strategic Advisory Team - Afghanistan.

Quite an accomplishment, particularly since she has managed to balance her career in the Reserves while practising Landscape Architecture full-time for over a decade.

A Commodore in the Navy is the equivalent of a Brigadier-General in the Army or the Air Force.

Really, Really Cheap Landscapes - Design and Detailing

Professor Robert Wright, FCSLA, OALA will be offering a course in Landscape Detailing:

“The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" critically examining detail, types methods, approaches, materials and costing that are part of everyday Landscape Architectural practices. A small pamphlet that can be redistributed to students and interested practitioners will be developed from the class work and detail precedents.

Professor Wright is inviting members to send examples from members’ own office or photo collections of examples of details that are both exemplary of practice or examples of extremely bad detail that you have encountered in the field or in your travels.

If you want to contribute to this project and influence the next generation of Landscape Architects please send detail examples in either .jpeg format or in .PDF (for drawn or cad examples) directly to r.wright@daniels.utoronto.ca by August 7, 2015.

Please include your personal or office detail so every contribution can be properly credited to the author or office. Participants will be the first to receive the results of our labor the published pamphlet.
