Water Conservation: A Responsibility & Opportunity
 With the dry winter and summer we have had, it is incumbent on all of us to conserve water. Not only will we collectively save a precious resource, but there are benefits to us individually for conserving water.
Here are some suggestions for ways to conserve water:
1) Look for leaks. Continuously running toilets, dripping faucets, or oozing hose connections can all waste water. While the drips may look minor, they add up.
(If you don't know if your toilet is leaking, put some food color in the water. If it vanishes without flushing, you have a leak. Parts to fix it are usually inexpensive.)
2) Install Water Savers. There are shower heads, toilets, and faucet aerators that will help you save water. Replacing an 18 litre-per-flush toilet with a 6-litre flush model represents a 70% savings in water flushed.
3) Insulate your water pipes with pre-slit insulation, so you get hot water faster with less cold water running down the drain while the water heats up.
4) Reduce shower time and turn the water off while you brush your teeth.
5) Consider a rain water harvesting barrel to capture water to use for animals or gardens. During a two-centimeter rainfall, you can collect nearly 600 gallons of rain water on a 1000-square foot roof.
6) Avoid garbage disposals, since you have to run lots of water to operate them properly. A compost pile will be a far better option, and you'll have good fertilizer for your plants.
7) Wash vegetables and fruits in a bowl of water, not under running water.
8) Plant drought-resistant lawns, plants, and shrubs to minimize watering needs.
9) Keep water in the refrigerator, rather than running water until it gets cold from the faucet.
10) Clean driveways and walkways with a broom instead of a hose.
11) Use a nozzle on the hose when you wash your car, so the water isn't just running down the driveway while you soap it.
12) Soaker hoses are a good alternative to sprinklers, or consider a drip-irrigation system, even for hanging baskets.
