HAWAII IRISH DANCE CEILI & DINNER
Sunday 07/26/2015
3:00-8:00pm

Anna O'Brien's Pub

2440 S. Beretania St.

Come join us for fun dancing, great music, and tasty food at the third Hawaii Irish Dance Ceili and Dinner event!

Dancing: Ceili dances are lively group dances that draw on the folk traditions of Ireland. Some dances have roots in other countries, such as England, Scotland, or France. Many of the dances performed at ceilis have been passed down for hundreds of years, while others are more recent.

At our ceili event, each dance will be taught to participants, and then instructions will be called out as the dance is performed. This is very similar to how contra dancing and other folk dance sessions are conducted, and it allows beginners to join in from the very first dance. You do not need any prior knowledge or skills to enjoy ceili dancing.

If you would like to learn footwork or try some ceili dancing before this event, please consider joining us for a beginner class or one of our ongoing summer workshops. However, this is absolutely not required and everyone will be invited to dance at the event, regardless of experience.

Music: Irish dancing is always best when performed to live music, and ceili dancing is no exception. We will have the pleasure of enjoying the music of Celtic Waves and Whiskey Starship as we dance. Both bands have played for our previous ceili and dinner events, and are great fun!

Dinner: We will be having a buffet-style dinner in the middle of the event, around 5:00pm, to replenish and refresh everyone's energy for more dancing. The cost of dinner is included in your ticket, and vegetarian options will be available. The bar will be open for drinks throughout the evening.

Tickets: The cost of a ticket is $20 at the door.

Thank you to everyone who has made these ceili events a success for us!

Berkeley J1 Irish Student Tragedy Assistance Fund

An Aloha Fund has been established to assist the families of the Irish students killed in the Berkeley balcony collapse tragedy:
A fund has been established in Hawaii to assist the families of six Irish students who died after a fourth-floor balcony collapsed at an apartment building in Berkeley, California.  All of the students were in America for the summer on J1 educational visas.
The Berkeley J1 Student Tragedy Aloha Fund is administered by The Society of The Friends of St. Patrick Hawaii, an organization formed in Hawaii in 1955 to provide assistance to Irish immigrants, native Irish and those of Irish descent. Information can be found at fosphawaii.ning.com. “This is a tragedy that touches us all,” said Noel Trainor, honorary Irish counsel to Hawaii. “The funds we raise will assist the immediate needs of the students and their families, who must now cope with the loss of their children in a place far from home.”
The Society of the Friends of Saint Patrick chairman Bill Comerford said, “In a week full of tragedies and sad headlines we Irish of Hawaii, are particularly sympathetic to these families facing such sad losses so far from home.  We wish to aid those who face this tragic circumstance and ask those of like feelings to join us by extending a hand of aloha.”
“We ask that you keep the victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers,” Trainor said.
Contributions to the fund may be made in three ways:
·         Visit any branch of American Savings Bank and deposit a check made payable to the Friends of Saint Patrick with a memo line Berkeley J1 Aloha Fund to Account # 81028 32968
·         Mail a check to The Friends of St. Patrick, PO Box 2178, Honolulu, HI, 96805.  The check should be made out to The Friends of St. Patrick and should include Berkeley J1 Aloha Fund in the memo line.
·         Contributions may also be made online by visiting www.gofundme.com/J1tragedyfund.
Any contribution big or small is gladly accepted.
