Thanks for your enthusiastic reception of The Scrap Basket and for your kind comments! This issue we're exploring something pretty unfamiliar to me - whole cloth quilts! I'm intrigued, and would love to hear if you've made any. Also, just a shout out for A Month of Improv Quilting, a multi-faceted event hosted by Daisy/ants to sugar and Sandi/Crafty Planner. WHAT'S UP
In case you missed any back issues of The Scrap Basket, I've added a tab over on A Quilter's Table. Clamshell quilts, modern hexies, quarter-cut log cabins, and plus blocks - they're all there!
I was definitely intrigued when I saw Anna/noodlehead'swholecloth quilts that she posted earlier this month. With double batt and hand-tied with Pearl Cotton #8, they looked just as soft, cuddly, and delightful as Anna described. [noodlehead531]
But then when I read about Svetlana/S.O.T.A.K HANDMADE's recent whole cloth quilt a few days later, it kind of made me stop and pay attention. I thought to myself, "hmm. Maybe this is 'a thing!'" Her fabric choices and the striped binding were pretty irresistible. Like Anna, she gave her quilt rounded corners and also used Perle cotton #8, though Svetlana hand-quilted hers. Wouldn't you know, she'd also made a whole cloth baby quilt a few years ago, and linked to that for us. You need to check out the binding on that one, where Svetlana used a running stitch and contrasting thread! [sotakhandmade]
Michelle/needle and nest shared her first whole cloth quilt saying, "This was an interesting quilt to make in that the bulk of my time and energy was spent on the quilting itself, rather than the piecing." Understandable, especially with Michelle's dense geometric quilting.
Patchwork...Without the Patchwork is a perfect description of Anna/Six White Horses' whole cloth quilt. Combining machine and hand-stitching with a goal of experimenting with "a quilt where the stitching, not the fabric, would become the focus," I think she totally succeeded.
Caitlin/Salty Oat is exploring whole-cloth quiltsin a different way - with preprinted fabric of her own design. Caitlin accented her design by quilting along each design line, which totally makes the top appear pieced. Super clever, and I'm looking forward to seeing where she goes with her idea. [saltyoat]
