The tiny Palestinian village that captured the world's attention

Nobody should take for granted the amount of international attention and support that the tiny Palestinian village of Khirbet Susya has garnered in recent weeks.

The EU’s foreign ministers, the U.S. State Department and the UN joined the usual chorus of activists calling on Israel to halt its plans for demolition and forced population transfer in the village.

With so much international attention, it appears that Susya may actually have a chance of survival. The Israeli army even hinted on Sunday that it may change course, at least temporarily.

But regardless of whether the Susya's 300 residents are saved, dozens of other villages in the south Hebron Hills and Jordan Valley are still in danger of demolition and displacement.

What would happen if the international community directed its outrage at the entire occupation instead of just one village? Could Susya be a test case for greater international pressure against the occupation?

Speaking at a large rally in the village on Friday, Palestinian MP Mustafa Barghoutti argued that the combination of on-the-ground popular protest and international solidarity can be especially effective.
