New figures show alarming trends in TB financing

The Stop TB Partnership is acalling on the world to renew commitments to funding the global fight against tuberculosis as the UN Financing for Development Conference in Addis Ababa concludes, where leaders discussed financing for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A new TB financing fact sheet released by the Partnership, 'Racing to the End TB Finish Line', shows that low-income high-burden TB countries (HBCs) need increased international support, while many lower-middle income HBCs are failing to step up with the needed domestic investments. In the eight low-income HBCs, domestic funding represents less than 7% of national TB budget needs, and in the nine lower-middle income HBCs, domestic funding represents less than 26% of national TB budget needs. Stakeholder Forum discusses U.S. Government National Action Plan to combat multidrug-resistant TB

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, along with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other U.S. government agencies, recently co-hosted a Stakeholder Forum in Washington, DC to discuss the development of the U.S. Government National Action Plan to address multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

The Plan is a companion document to President Barack Obama's National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and identifies important actions for the U.S. Government over the next five years to combat MDR-TB globally.

With approximately 9 million new cases of TB, and about 480,000 cases of MDR-TB emerging in the world in 2013, the global TB burden continues to remain high. In 2013 alone, MDR-TB claimed the lives of an estimated 210,000 people. The forum convened stakeholders from government agencies, research organizations, advocacy groups and other leaders in the TB field to provide feedback, discuss challenges and highlight resources needed to effectively implement the plan. The Global Drug Facility's mission to Timor Leste this month showed that the country has made strides in TB control.

The Stop TB Partnership's Global Drug Facility missions in July

This month, the Global Drug Facility organized missions to several countries including Myanmar, Lao PDR, the Democratic Republic of Korea, Jordan and Zimbabwe. In Timor Leste for example, there has been a visible improvement in the country's TB control programme in terms of drug management, programme management, drug resistant TB management and quality control of sputum microscopy since GDF's last mission to Timor Leste in 2012. In Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Health and Child Care plans to roll out the Zimbabwe Assisted Pull system (ZAP), from the Zimbabwe Informed Push system (ZIP). By doing this, it is expected that the ZAP will dramatically reduce expiries at all levels of the distribution chain.
