Stakeholder Forum discusses U.S. Government National Action Plan to combat multidrug-resistant TB
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, along with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other U.S. government agencies, recently co-hosted a Stakeholder Forum in Washington, DC to discuss the development of the U.S. Government National Action Plan to address multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).
The Plan is a companion document to President Barack Obama's National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and identifies important actions for the U.S. Government over the next five years to combat MDR-TB globally.
With approximately 9 million new cases of TB, and about 480,000 cases of MDR-TB emerging in the world in 2013, the global TB burden continues to remain high. In 2013 alone, MDR-TB claimed the lives of an estimated 210,000 people. The forum convened stakeholders from government agencies, research organizations, advocacy groups and other leaders in the TB field to provide feedback, discuss challenges and highlight resources needed to effectively implement the plan.
