Medicare is as American
as Apple Pie!
Nurses, doctors, lawmakers celebrate with picnic for Medicare's 50th birthday in Highland Park
Minnesota Nurses Association and state and federal lawmakers are joining together to celebrate Medicare's 50th anniversary and call for more PIE! That stands for Protect, Improve, and Expand Medicare. Healthcare is a human right, and nurses want healthcare for all.
Join nurse leaders in Highland Park in St. Paul to hear how we can improve and expand Medicare. Nurses see patients every day who skip necessities in life to make up for the gaps in existing Medicare coverage. They can't afford prescription drugs, dental, and eye care, and they have to choose between their health and their food budget.
State and local elected officials, including Governor Mark Dayton and US Representative Keith Ellison (DFL-Minneapolis) will join the celebration, make some remarks, and enjoy pie.
Where: The picnic shelter at Highland Park,1227 Montreal Ave, St. Paul, MN 55116
When: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., July 30, 2015
Who: Speakers list order
Rose Roach, MNA Executive Director
Laurel Gamm, MD Physicians for National Health Program Board Co-chair
Dan McGrath, Take Action MN Executive Director
US Rep. Keith Ellison
Lt. Governor Tina Smith
Governor Mark Dayton
How: Speakers will address the crowd from 5:30-6:00 pm. Then all will join in singing happy birthday to Medicare. Pie and activities will begin shortly thereafter.
Why: Medicare was established as a safety net for seniors and the disabled, but some would like to reduce Medicare or dissolve it completely by raising the eligibility age, changing Medicare to a voucher system, or increasing cost-sharing through higher deductibles and co-pays. If Medicare is going to make it till its own 65th birthday, measures must be made to secure the benefits seniors have rightly earned and contributed to throughout their working lives.
