Our Mission:

The mission of the Habersham Humane Society, Inc., is to advance and promote humane treatment andcare of Habersham County’s companion animals through advocacy, education, targeted programs and support of the John B. Gesbocker Animal Shelter of Habersham County.

We help the community by:

  • Assisting with low cost spay and neuter options
  • Transporting animals to shelters where their chances for survival and adoption are better
  • Raising awareness and donations through grant writing, donor fundraisers, and presenting to Civic Organizations and Church groups
  • Educating students at local schools about responsible pet ownership
  • Directing aid to the Habersham County Animal Shelter
Last year, the Habersham Humane Society received a generous grant of $10,000.00 from the Two Mauds Foundation that allowed us to offer a low cost spay/neuter option to our community by way of voucher and/or transport to NEGeorgia Humane Society. Over 400 spay/neuters were done using these funds!  We appreciate the support we received from the community and the many volunteers that helped with registration each month.  Please contact us regarding upcoming clinics and the volunteer opportunities available.
Thank you,
Habersham Humane Society Team

SpayGeorgia’s goal: To reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats in Georgia by providing low cost spay/neuter certificates to Georgia residents in need of partial financial assistance. - See more at:  www.spaygeorgia.org
Thanks to some generous donations, HHS was recently able to deliver almost 500 pounds of Dog/Puppy Food, 192 cans of Cat Food, 7 pounds of Cat Food, and 3 large boxes of Cat Litter to the Habersham Animal Shelter.
As much as your dog may love running around in the sweet sunshine of summertime, it's important to remember that their little puppy paws can get burned on the super-hot pavement, and they can suffer from heatstroke. But what's too hot for humans is not necessarily the same as what's too hot for dogs. So how do you know?
All you need to do is put the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If it's too hot for you to hold it that long, then it's most likely too hot for your puppy's paws.

Northeast Georgia Spay Neuter Information
HHS will be dedicating the month of August to
Awareness of Community Cats
Please watch our Facebook page all through August for information about this important issue & our efforts to tackle this problem.
Our on-going TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program at Pitts Park in Clarkesville has resulted in encouraging statistics:
HHS has helped trap & neuter 33 cats living in Pitts Park over the last 3 years.  That colony is now down to only 12 members and for the first time THERE ARE NO KITTENS in the group this year!!
HHS needs volunteers & donations to help us expand our TNR program to other problem areas in Habersham County.
CORNELIA RESIDENTS:  To reduce the number of homeless and euthanized pets, the city of Cornelia offers qualified residents a free spay/neuter program.  Please call Cornelia City Hall for details.

To provide services to those least able to afford them, eligibility is based on gross household income and the number of people in the household. All the pet owner has to do is complete the application, get an appointment date & time, and take their pet/s to the participating clinic. There is a $10 deposit per animal to reserve the appointment.  Applications are accepted Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Cornelia City Hall.
Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Registration
HHS will be at Clarkesville library 1:00 - 3:00 Saturday September 12 registering pets to be spayed/neutered.  Surgeries will be performed by Atlanta Humane Society's mobile unit at Clarkesville Fairgrounds on October 28 & 29.

HHS has altered 106 pets so far this year working with Atlanta Humane Society's mobile surgical unit.

Each week these amazing photographers dedicate their time capturing awesome photos of the animals currently available for adoption at the local animal shelter in Habersham County.

Habersham Humane Society, working with Road Trip Home, Animal Welfare Society, Cape Ann Animal Aid, Middletown Humane Society, and Greater Androscoggin Humane Society helps save homeless dogs and cats by transporting them to no-kill shelters!

Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk, Maine is a no kill, non profit rescue that has been taking our dogs and kittens since 2012.

Transporting/transferring homeless animals from Habersham County to our northern rescue partners means less crowding in the local animal shelter which means less euthanasia.

It costs  approx. $50 to send an animal on a transport. Consider DONATING to this life-saving program.
This sweet little girl was thrown out of a truck at Lake Russell. HHS volunteers fostered her in a loving home while getting her medically certified until she could get a spot on the Road Trip Home van to Animal Welfare Society in Maine where she was adopted into her Furever Home within a week of her arrival!!
We're all so happy to hear from her new human about Jenny B's  new life:
"Hello, I am the happy new dad to Jenny B. I have had her for a week now. What a smart girl. She gets along great with my sons dog and my cat who rules the household. We go to the dog park at least once a day to socialize with the rest of the "pack". Thanks so much for Jenny B."
His handsome boy, Jackson, was pulled from the Habersham County Animal Shelter, fostered by an HHS volunteer and transported to Animal Welfare Society in February 2013. His new human, Debbie, sent us this picture and success story:
"Just wanted to share a story with you. Our local bank is dog-friendly!  Jackson is well known there.  Whenever we go, Jackson trots right to the cupboard where the dog treats are kept.  He sits and waits patiently, but doesn't need to wait long – all the tellers know & welcome his visits so much, they talk about him in their new teller training! He's famous!!
Thank you for fostering Jackson, thank you for being a part of his rescue.  Without you, we would never have had this awesome member of our family."
Habersham Humane Society has fostered & transported a total of 47 animals so far in 2015!!!
We currently have a litter of 6 puppies in foster prepping for their transport date.
Every transported animal, especially puppies, requires medical exams & shots before getting on the van. Donations are always needed to help us help them!!
HHS needs more volunteer drivers to deliver dogs to Acworth. Call 706-839-1040 if you are interested in volunteering for this very rewarding service.
These little sweeties are waiting for their turn on the van to Maine.
Dixie, Tippy & Daisy have one last romp at foster mom's house before Dixie & Tippy were transported to Maine.
Dixie, once a pregnant stray, shown here after she weaned her 3 puppies. After motherhood and a spay, it's Dixie's turn to find a loving, forever home in Kennebunk, Maine. She was adopted only 2 days after arriving at Animal Welfare Society!
See Tippy's story below.
Tippy's Success Story!
Tippy had demodex mange and a secondary bacterial infection when he was surrendered by his owner to HHS on 3/18.
HHS loved & cared for him until he was transported to Animal Welfare Society on 7/3/15. Tippy was adopted on 7/11/15 after being available for adoption for less than 4 days!
HHS's Education Volunteer has completed visits to all three middle schools and presented our message 16 times so far in 2015. We estimate we've reached 425 students and 9 teachers.
We are hoping and "crossing our paws" to have an on-going, expanded pet care education opportunity with the Habersham school system.

A special thanks to Julie Whitt for coming to North Habersham and bringing Bella.  Students loved having a rescued dog in the classroom.
