August 2015
Greetings, friends!
Hope you have been enjoying these gorgeous summer days (and freak thunderstorms)! It's hard to believe that summer is starting to wind down. As I type, our neighbors and teacher friends at Carmel Middle School are gearing up for another year, with school starting NEXT week. Our programming at MEarth typically does not fully start until after Labor Day, so our team has a bit more time to regroup after the summer camp season before diving into the school year!
Speaking of Summer Camp.... our 2015 camp programs were the most successful yet! All told, we welcomed 95 summer campers (22 who were gifted full scholarships thanks to generous local donors) and 18 Eco-Camp Leaders for four awesome weeks of camp. In addition to our stellar staff and volunteers, we were SO lucky to have the helping hands of three full-time interns who earned college credit for assisting with our property maintenace and programs. These fabulous young ladies will undoubtedly go on to do great things and we were thrilled to have them here with us: Sarah Carroll (University of Richmond), Shelby Luce (Tufts University) and Kate Reagan (Cal Poly).
Once again, some THANK YOUs are due to our incredible community of supporters and friends! This year, MEarth was selected as a community partner in the Lyceum of Monterey County's innovative iLead+Design Summer Program for local high school students at the MIIS Digital Learning Commons.
This two-week intensive program focuses participants on "real world" challenges and applies the design-thinking process to envision, prototype, and test innovative solutions. These students focused on how to inspire "eco-behavior changes" in program participants, and it was so fun to see what they came up with. What a great program!
We were also selected as one of the nonprofit beneficiaries for Edible Monterey Bay's "In your Backyard" series at the beautiful Holman Ranch on July 15th. The event was well attended and the venue was gorgeous. Thank you!
We've also had a flurry of awesome Sustainable Chef Dinners in the green building! July featured the dynamic Chef duo of Kyle Odell and Eden Hutchinson from Carmel Belle. Follow this link to check out an album of gorgeous images from past dinners! The next event will welcome 1833's Executive Chef Jason Franey and CLM's Corporate Executive Pastry Chef Ben Spungin. This will certainly be an evening full of delicious surprises. Gorgeous floral arrangements from the incredible Burst + Bloom will adorn the table, and coffee from Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Company will be served to round out the meal. Hope to see you around the table (see sidebar for ticket details)!
Looking forward to another great year! We'd love to see you out on the property soon.
Thank you for your support!
With great gratitude,
Tanja Roos, MNA
Executive Director, MEarth
P.S. Did you know you can purchase flowers from us? Our garden is absolutely overflowing with gorgeous seasonal blossoms (like that stunning "teddy bear" sunflower in the header image and gorgeous dahlia to the right)! Contact our Garden Manager Cassie@MEarthCarmel.org if you have a special event approaching and are interested in purchasing fresh flowers.
