Savor summer's "Sunday" and make a plan for "Monday"...

We've had what I call the Friday night of summer (June), we're closing in on Saturday (July), and the slower Sunday (August) is upon us. I experience a huge letdown as summer ends, but I always feel better if I have a full "To Do" list and calendar for Monday (September).

Busy people are already filling their calendars for September, so it makes sense to get a jump on things and spend at least a couple of days now thinking about who you want to meet with, companies you want to target for a job search, reinvention ideas you want to explore, industry meetings you want to attend and overall work+life goals you want to set for the fall.

If you devote some August time to planning, you'll be able to go full steam ahead post Labor Day--and you won't be sidetracked by the flurry of back-to-school and general post-summer activity. So many of my coaching clients put off summer planning and then can't catch their breath until the end of September. By that point they feel crunched for time with just two months before the holiday season slowdown begins.

Though September signals the last quarter of the year, there's always a refreshing element that feels like a beginning. With some strategic thinking now, you'll be ready to hit the ground running on "Monday" and move in new work+life directions.

"Work at home" means all work and no playdough…
All mothers want flexibility, and for many the ideal is to work for an employer from a home office. Often, though, women do some magical thinking and mistakenly believe they can tend to children and professional projects at the same time. Read this 9 Lives for Women blog post to get some realistic child care strategies for the work-at-home mom...

Dare yourself out of a rut...
One of my friends always says “it’s me against me”. I subscribe to that internal competition, always propelling myself forward to the next challenge. Along those lines is a fascinating book called I Dare Me. A journalist and cancer survivor, author Lu Ann Cahn was feeling angry, frustrated and “stuck.” Her daughter convinced her to start a “Year of Firsts.” For the next 365 days, Cahn made a point of doing something she had never done before, every day. Before she knew it, her whole perspective on life had changed…

Did you know that just about every recruiter looks for candidates on Linkedin?
In my coaching practice I'm surprised by the number of job seekers I meet who have no presence—or a very weak presence—on Linkedin. In today's job market employers do everything they can to avoid paying placement fees, so Linkedin is a hotbed of recruiting activity at all professional levels. I know a young professional who tripled her salary after her new employer saw her on Linkedin—and a seasoned executive who got a $2,500 an hour consulting project from a well-crafted Linkedin profile. After you get your Linkedin profile in shape, read “Common Mistakes Job Seekers Make and How to Avoid Them”…

What's that Twitter thing, and is it a silly waste of time?

To be a successful entrepreneur, you really need to be "Type E"...

Do you worry about your dress size more than the size of your retirement account?
Most women seem to have gotten the memo on physical fitness. Every seat is taken in spin class, and lots of women walk around in some variation of exercise clothes. But we all need to be concerned with the size of our retirement nest eggs (and overall long-term financial security), not just the size of our dresses.
