A new online tool lets anyone with smartphone or internet access check real-time beach or open water conditions for Madison lakes. Users can get information on water temperature and clarity, as well as updates on beach closures, algal blooms and even the presence of ducks and geese.

What's New at UW?

Solar textile collaboration weaves chemistry and design
Bridging the art studio and the energy lab, two UW–Madison professors are working together to create lightweight solar cells out of fabric.
Climate change impacts birds in Hawaii
Researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey and UW–Madison assess how global climate change and rainfall will affect future malaria risk to native Hawaiian bird populations in the coming century.

Sustainability Folks & Spokes Bike Tour

To celebrate Sustain Dane's initiative smART [sustainability + madison + art], they will be hosting a sustainability bike tour to visit multiple projects throughout the city. A suggested donation of $10 will support program expansion.

Madison begins citywide "Green Madison" initiative
Madison is one of 50 cities in the running to win a $5 million prize for reducing energy consumption. Residents are encouraged to contribute to the effort by participating in an online game called "Cool Choices."
Obama unveils major climate change proposal
The Clean Power Plan, announced earlier this week, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. coal-burning power plants through a combination of required carbon reduction standards and incentive programs.
