RootsRated Pint Night

Monthly Meet-Up - An Evening of Biking - A group ride, and clinics on safety, maintenance, hydration and nutrition - Tuesday, August 18 - 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Join us at this month’s meet-up hosted by Midwest Mountaineering and sponsored by The Hub Bike Coop, and Bike MN.  This event is a free interactive evening of biking education and a bike ride in Minneapolis.  The Hub Bike Coop and Bike MN will cover bike safety and bike maintenance in a 90 minute clinic.

After the clinic, the group will depart from Midwest Mountaineering for a 60 minute bike ride along the Mississippi River.  Following the ride, Skratch Labs will offer an educational talk on Natural Hydration and Nutrition.  Bring your bikes and don’t forget your friends and family!

5:00 – 6:30p.m.:  The Bike Hub Coop and Bike MN – bike safety and bike maintenance.
6:30 – 7:30p.m.:  Bike Ride along the Mississippi River.
7:30 – 8:30p.m.:  Skratch Labs – Natural hydration and nutrition talk.
Don’t have a bike for the bike ride?  Bike MN will supply 10 bikes for participants to use for the ride!  Call Midwest Mountaineering to reserve a bike (612) 339-3433.

Sunday, August 23 - 3:00pm - 4:15pm  Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain Slideshow and Service Opportunities
Jim McCaffrey and Pete Bock will show slides and talk about the service opportunities on the Camino and training that prepares one to have this kind of service experience.  Jim has recently returned after doing the St. James Way trek a second time which included a service role as hospitelero in an Albuergue or pilgrims' hostel. The focus of this slide presentation and talk will be on service on the Camino and preparatory training for that service as well as combining service with hiking the Camino.

Monday, August 24 - 7:00pm  A SUPerior Adventure - Jared Munch Completes First-ever Stand-Up-Paddleboard Circumnavigation of Lake Superior
Check out Jared Munch's epic summer on Lake Superior. Jared will explain how to outfit an SUP for expedition style paddling as well as gear placement on the board to minimize wind loading.  He will talk about what gear he brought and the purpose for bringing three different style paddles to complete my voyage.  A question and answer session will follow.  Expedition Room, Midwest Mountaineering


Tuesday,  August 25 - 6:30pm - Superior Hiking Trail
The Superior Hiking Trail at over 300 miles is one of the top long trails in the United States. In this presentation by Kim Fishburn you'll learn about the different parts of the trail, things you need to know about hiking the trail, and resources o find out more about the trail. Wednesday, August 26 - 5:30pm – 8:30pm Kayaking 101 – On the Water
Program emphasizing safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition for entry level individuals.  This course is appropriate for all kayaks that are paddled solo. What will you learn?:  Kayaking 101 Syllabus  Pre-registration required – Cost $30, no refunds.  Minimum age 16. 612–339–3433.  Kayak rental available for $30 (call store to reserve).  Rental includes paddle and skirt.  You provide kayak transportation. Thursday, August 27 - 6:30pm Landscapes and Wildlife Photography Workshop Series - Class 1 (of 3)
In this dynamic 3-session Photo Workshop, Ted Hall and Michael Karns show their work and talk shop.  Our goal is to get you taking better pictures!
Class 1:  We'll show our work and describe the techniques and gear that we used to create it.  We'll cover composition and basic technical concepts (f-stop, shutter speed, long exposure, etc).  Ted's focus will be landscape and environmental portrait photography, while Michael will show examples of his extraordinary close-up bird and wildlife images.
Class 2:  Sunday, Sept 6.  
Class 3:  Wednesday, Sep 9.

Thursday, August 27 - 6:30pm - Climbing 102
A Climbing 101 clinic is a prerequisite for this clinic.  Carolyn Hansen will provide this opportunity to expand your technical skills and help prepare you for more advanced climbing.  We'll review knots, commands, and belaying, along with more in-depth explanations and uses of climbing gear.  Don't worry; we will still have time to climb!  Required:  All climbers must have a completed liability waiver on file at Midwest Mountaineering.  Liability waivers expire at the end of the calendar year and must be re-submitted every year. Saturday, September 26 - 7:00pm - Reel Rock 10 Film Tour

Midwest Mountaineering hosts and Gore-Tex, Windstopper and The North Face present the 10th annual Reel Rock Film Tour.  Reel Rock delivers the year's most exciting climbing and adventure films to audiences in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

From big walls to big moves, REEL ROCK 10 features athletes Tommy Caldwell, Kevin Jorgeson, Alex Honnold, Jimmy Webb, Daniel Woods and a special tribute to the late Dean Potter.  This year's tour boasts an eclectic program that will get you psyched!  Reel Rock shows are spirited events where climbers and outdoors lovers come together to celebrate and sample the ultimate in adventure filmmaking.  Prize giveaways, appearances by top climbers, and fundraising fro non-profit organizations are always part of the party at Reel Rock events.
