A Word From the President

Gudrun Giddings

Hej Alla,

We are looking forward to our annual "Back2Business" mixer on Wednesday August 26th and this time we are collaborating with the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce, expanding our wonderful network and introducing you to more superb business opportunities. Please remember to save the date and look for the invitation next week.

Always very proud that Sweden is doing so great in the startup and innovation area. “Unicorn” is the new fun nickname of a startup company that is valued at more than $1Billion, according to the recently published magazine article in “Wired UK”. The article rank Stockholm as the second-largest producer of “Unicorn-startups”, following Silicon Valley. Please enjoy more information in WIRED’s “100 Hottest European Startups 2015: Stockholm” just below.

Sweden has really started to make a name for itself in the ”Unicorn-Start-ups” world. ”Unicorn”, in this case, means that the company is valued at more than $1Billion. Well-known companies like Skype, Spotify and Mojang have been around for a while and were all a big part in putting Stockholm on the Start-up map.

Science and technology magazine "Wired UK" recently presented a list over the hottest European Start-ups in 2015. On the list, Stockholm was represented by as much as 10 companies. According to Wired UK, Stockholm is now the second largest producer in the world of the so-called ”Unicorn-Start-ups”, only to be beaten by Silicon Valley in Californa.

Innovation to Solve Draught Problems

To fight drought, Los Angeles turns to "shade balls"
Film Credit: CBS Evening News at Youtube.com

As most "Angelinos" probably know by now, the last couple of years the city and state has suffered a rough draught. Water waste is a big problem and therefore it is a high priority to find ways to minimize this. Earlier this week, the LA Reservoir was filled up with an additional 20,000 ”Shade Balls” 4-inch, floating, UV-light blocking balls - making a total of 96 million. These will keep approximately 300 million gallons of water from evaporating, prevents chemical reactions and curtail algae blooms. The project is not only very efficient for saving water, it is also a very cost effective solution, punching in at around 15% of the cost of other alternatives for covering the lake.

Who is Benjamin C. Oberman?
I would say that I'm an athlete at heart. The way I view the world is as an athlete. I find I’m happiest when I’m suffering a little bit, I typically choose the path of more resistance, I get bored if something's too easy or too simple. I love championing those great things that deserve to be seen or heard or experienced but don't necessarily have everything going towards it in terms of a natural marketing. I love problem-solving and inventing ways and solutions that can make the world a better place. And I'm quite simple I think; I love the mountains, I love being outdoors, I love the culture, and I love interesting people. If I won the lottery today nothing would change except that it would be easier to pay my bills and my company would be better financed (haha).

What is "Film Festival Flix"?
With Film Festival Flix, created and program online film festivals. We amplify great films to the world!

Tell us about the on-going "Indie Film Festival".
IndieFest International is something unique; it’s the only festival in the world where you could possibly see a collection of Oscar-nominated films, award-winning films from Cannes, Berlin, Sundance, Toronto, SXSW, Venice and more. I don't know of any other place where that kind of a collection would exist in a festival setting. Harnessing the power of the internet, the festival is available to everybody. With streaming capability you can watch, what you want, when you want and where you want. We provide interactive opportunities with online Q’s & A’s and discussions. Throughout the year there are live events that bring the community together. You can meet like-minded individuals and have that social experience that you get by going to a physical festival. And hopefully, 58 award-winning films for $29.95 is a good value proposition! The festival is live through September 15th.

If you were to choose only one film from this year's line-up, which one would you recommend for everyone to see? It was one of the very first films I released, and still one of my favorites is a Tyrolean / German film called "The Holy Land of Tyrol". It’s an exceptionally well crafted, beautiful and moving film that was made as a master's thesis by a 23-year-old young filmmaker, Philipp J. Pamer.

What’s next for "Film Festival Flix"?
We’re in the process right now of making a massive pivot from being a distributor that championed films from great festivals around the world to becoming the online film festival platform. Our mission to connect great films with audiences remains as strong as ever. We've found a better way to accomplish that mission.
