Thousands of California convicts to regain voting rights

(SACRAMENTO OBSERVER) - California restored voting rights Tuesday to tens of thousands of criminals serving sentences under community supervision, reversing a decision by a state official that they could not participate in elections. Read more

50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act: Does your vote really matter?

(LOS ANGELES SENTINEL) - On August 6 1965, the Voting Rights Act (VRA) was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. August 6, 2015 will mark the 50th year anniversary since African American citizens overcame the prevention of the right to vote, and obtained the right to be seen as equal. The Act was signed to create long-lasting change, however questions remain on whether or not people have taken full advantage of what was obtained or whether or not our vote matters.  Read more 


San Bernardino County Dignitaries Participate in ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

(WESTSIDE STORY NEWSPAPER) - Last week, Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown (D-San Bernardino) and other local officials took the “Ice Bucket Challenge” to raise awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that renders patients unable to use their voluntary muscles.  Read more 


DOJ and sheriff’s department reach settlement to reform L.A. County jails 

(LA WATTS TIMES) -  The U.S. Justice Department reached a settlement agreement with Los Angeles County and its sheriff's department to protect prisoners from suicide risks and excessive force in the nation’s largest jail system, it was announced this week.   Read more

Blacks Divided on Whether Police Treat Minorities Fairly
(GALLUP) -Black Americans are divided over whether their local police treat racial minorities, including Blacks, fairly or unfairly. Fifty-two percent of Blacks say local police treat these minorities "very fairly" or "fairly," while 48% say the police act "unfairly" or "very unfairly." In contrast, 73% of national adults, 71% of Hispanics and 78% of whites say the police treat racial minorities fairly.  Read more  

 

Black Caucus members seek Silicon Valley diversity  
(POLITICAL BLOTTER) - Rep. Barbara Lee will join Congressional Black Caucus Chairman G.K. Butterfield and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries on a Silicon Valley junket aimed at increasing African Americans’ representation in the tech industry.   Read more  

 

Latinos overtook Blacks in Watts, but frustrations remain raw
(LA TIMES) - "We want people to know we're here," said Amada Valle, 58. "And it's time for our voice to be heard." Fifty years ago next week, when rioters set Watts on fire, the neighborhood was nearly all Black. Today, Latinos make up more than 70% of the population.   Read more

Everyone knows him, including the customers, and even if they didn’t, they’d recognize him instantly. Ferguson spurs 40 new state measures; activists want more
(LOS ANGELES SENTINEL) - When a white Ferguson policeman fatally shot a black 18-year-old nearly a year ago, the St. Louis suburb erupted in violent protests and the nation took notice. Two Workers Sue Fed Ex for Racial Discrimination, Unsafe Working Conditions
(LOS ANGELES SENTINEL) - An aircraft technician and his boss who work at FedEx’s Los Angeles International Airport location are suing the courier giant for allegedly ignoring their complaints that the company put profits ahead of safety by not maintaining its aircraft consistent with FAA safety requirements.   Read more 

 

Study: Blacks in Newsroom at All-Time Low
(SACRAMENTO OBSERVER) - Last week, The Huffington Post offered this bold headline: “There will be more non-white journalists because the public will demand them.” But based on an extensive study published in the Columbia Journalism Review, apparently no one is demanding Black journalists; if so, no one’s hiring them.  Read more
