Legislative Community Roundtable Held at Lanterman

On August 5, the Association of Regional Center Agencies (ARCA), with the support of Lanterman Regional Center, as well as the co-hosting and participation of San Gabriel/Pomona, Eastern Los Angeles, North Los Angeles County, Harbor, Westside, and South Central Los Angeles Regional Centers, held a community roundtable.

This event was designed to inform legislators about the crises the developmental service system and their constituents face, and the options available in the Special Session (X2). The event was a tremendous success due in part to the involvement of all seven Los Angeles County regional centers, their lead staff and the participants each brought.

This two-hour roundtable saw representatives of eight Senators and six Assemblymembers, as well as Asm. Sebastian Ridley-Thomas and Sen. Jim Beall, in attendance (see list at end). Over 30 invited participants, who were broadly representative of the developmental services community, shared their personal stories for their benefit. Roughly a dozen members of the public were also there, and observed the event.

Both Senator Beall and Assemblymember Ridley-Thomas addressed the group, expressing appreciation of the community’s commitment. Sen. Beall spoke about the needs of our community, and his bill to provide 10% and funding reform (ARCA is in support). Asm. Ridley-Thomas urged our community to keep our special session requests short, simple and clear. He added that Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins has expressed some urgency about addressing the issues this year.

This proved to be an excellent opportunity to help our community engage with the Legislature at the local level, and continue to advocate for a 10% across-the-board increase, and long-term funding reform. Additionally, a representative of the LA News Group was in attendance, and described the event in this editorial.

Let The People Paint

A picture and for that matter a video is truly worth 1,000 words.

So we'll let the photos and video speak for themselves. Check out a slideshow of photos taken during a painting project with artist and legendary skateboarder Steve Olson at Improvised Program Services.

Major and Lynn Lewis share, "We met Steve through a neighbor who is also an artist and thought this would be a nice summer project for our clients. Steve has done many projects with other organizations, including the Smithsonian. We just did this project in July and most all of the clients at IPS participated."

A video of the painting project was also created and can be watched on You Tube.
Lanteman Law Clinic Provides Advocacy Assistance with School-Related Issues

Pictured above are three of the current law students working with the Lanterman Law Clinic. They recently conducted a training for Lanterman service coordinators on the Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Nurturing the Development of Young Children with Dr. Tom Pomeranz

Saturday, August 29, 2015
9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

What we know is that early intervention for children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities can have profound impact on improving quality of life. In this session, Dr. Tom Pomeranz will discuss a variety of strategies that can easily be utilized to promote and facilitate the development of young children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

Outside the realm of typically utilized interventions, e.g. OT, PT, Speech/Language, Pomeranz will discuss the importance of such strategies as thinking out loud, non-contingent touching, floor play, selecting toys that maximize learning, supporting participation in all aspects of childrens’ lives, proactively responding to behavioral issues and many others. He will also explain the importance of compensating for the fact that many children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities “don’t push back” and therefore, parents must shape the behavior to support their child's independence.

This session is intended for parents and professionals involved with children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, ages birth to 5 years of age.
