"Working Toward Graduation Day"

from www.casaforchildren.org

Angel Lopez on graduation day, with his CASA volunteer
“Having Gordon’s support has taken me where I am today.”

Program: CASA for Riverside County
Location: Riverside, CA

Angel Lopez always knew that he would be the first person in his family ever to graduate from high school. He just did not know where or when.

By the time he was 15, Angel had lived in 14 foster homes. Frequent—and sometimes sudden—moves meant frequent changes in school districts. Compounding the problem, Angel was often the victim of schoolyard bullies harassing him about his sexual orientation.

When Angel met CASA volunteer Gordon Elkins three years ago, he was getting Ds and Fs in every subject, and living in a foster home that did not approve of his being gay. In the beginning, Angel responded to Gordon the same way he responded to everyone: with silence.

“I could see that Angel did not trust me, did not trust anyone. And he certainly did not feel comfortable with his LGBT identity,” says Gordon, who also identifies as LGBT. “In response, I decided to be as outrageous as I could, hoping that if I was in-your-face out to him, it would make Angel feel more comfortable with his own identity.”

Gordon’s strategy worked. One month after becoming Angel’s advocate, Gordon received a call from Angel’s social worker, excitedly asking: What have you done to Angel? We just had our first conversation ever!

Angel’s progress did not stop there. After three more moves, Gordon helped facilitate Angel’s placement into a stable, accepting foster home and transfer into a continuing education high school, with smaller class sizes that offered a credit recovery program. Angel felt he fit in there and was accepted just for whom he was and soon made many friends there.

On May 31, Angel graduated from Rancho Vista High School in Temecula, CA. He is planning to attend Mount San Jacinto College in August.

“If I had not met Gordon, I would not be as comfortable and confident as I am. Knowing him has enabled me to be myself, to not care about what other people think about me. Having his support has taken me where I am today.”

The 4th Annual CASA School Supply Drive was a huge success! We would like to thank everyone who donated as well as our amazing sponsors who served as drop off locations and helped us spread the word: Magic Grill and Magic Grill Fried Chicken in West Monroe, Sparrows Home Boutique in West Monroe, Talbot's in Monroe and Bella Sol Tanning in Monroe. We'd also like to give a huge thanks to Danyelle DeCorte who has given her time and energy to organize this entire event for the 4th year in a row! We are grateful and we know that our CASA kids will be able to start off the school year on the right foot.

Core Values at Work

Leslie Bryan, Advocate for the 4th JDC
Core Values: Excellence & Service
Submitted by: Shuronda Hampton

Leslie is always going beyond the call of duty for her CASA child.  The child recently said he wanted a particular backpack for school and Leslie purchased it along with the other supplies we did not have.  She has never missed a monthly visit with him and often sees him two to three times a month.  She is awesome. Great job Leslie!

Heart Gallery In Search of Display Locations

The Heart Gallery is a traveling photo gallery featuring local children who have been freed for adoption. Displaying the gallery in public locations allows the children to have more exposure and can help them find safe, permanent homes. If you  or someone you know would be interested in displaying The Heart Gallery in your business, church or any other setting, please contact Melanie Crain at mcrain@hopefornela.org or Sara McBroom at smcbroom@hopefornela.org. You can also view all the children currently in The Heart Gallery by visiting www.heartgalleryofnela.org.

These dedicated advocates helped to find safe, permanent homes for 9 children in July:

Christopher Mapp, Tammy Rowland, Stacy Simmons,
Betty Gray, Kimberly Correro,

Our thanks and congratulations go out to each of these advocates for their persistence. Thank you for believing in the mission of CASA and in the children you serve!
Optima is a new database system being implemented across our CASA of Northeast Louisiana program. Our advocate supervisors have been using the program for nearly a year and we are now expanding its use to all active volunteers.  The program helps us organize and track information related to CASA cases and is designed to assist our volunteers as they continue to provide quality advocacy across the region. We will be holding a series of in-services to help volunteers learn the program and answer any questions they may have. The next one will be:

Thursday, August 20th
6:00PM - 7:30PM
Monroe Office
