A bit of background on Arbour Day:

September 1st - Arbour Day, was first celebrated in South Africa in 1983. In 1999, it was decided to extend the celebration of Arbour Day to Arbour Week. As such, from 1 – 7th September every year, schools, businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate in community ‘greening events’ to propose a brighter, greener future for our country.

Whereas most holidays acknowledge the past, Arbour Day is the one holiday that focuses on the future.

To increase awareness of South Africa’s > 2000 indigenous trees, a common and rare tree are identified as the ‘Tree of the Year’ for every year.

2015’s tree of the year (common)

  • Forest bushwillow  (Combretum krausii)

2015’s tree of the year (rare)

  • Parsley Tree (Heteromorpha arborescens)
