September's Song

Walk with authority, speak with authority, act with authority, live with authority. Half-hearted wishy-washiness is for the weak.  ~Olivia J. Scott

I've written about what it means to live with purpose and why it's important to live with purpose.  This month I'd like to help you figure out the HOW of living with purpose.

Living with purpose requires that you slow down.  It means that you start to do things "on purpose", with deliberate intention, aware that every action has a consequence. This doesn't come easy for us in our fast-paced, multi-tasking society but it is the only way to fully recognize and appreciate the impact and effect of everything that you think, say and do.

It can be challenging.  We get swept up in the chaos around us and we simply react - intentions flying out the window!  So we start with simple things.  Try this: become aware that you're breathing.  Pause for just a moment. Take a full, deep breath in and when you get to the very top of that inhalation, pause again and feel the stillness. Then, breathe out slowly and completely, allowing every single particle of the breath to leave your lungs.  That, my friends, was a breath "on purpose" or intentionally. And, that's a start to living "on purpose", infusing every action with intention.  Each time you feel yourself being drawn into the "fray", come back to your breathing - one intentional breath or several - you'll slow down, calm down, and begin to think, act and speak with clear intention.

As you  learn to do this with more frequency, you will literally re-wire your brain into more positive thought patterns.  You start to become more aware of the beauty in the simple, everyday tasks and chores.  You feel the sensation of the earth beneath your feet.  You recognize the look of joy, hurt, fear or anger on a the face of a friend, co-worker, loved one or even a passing stranger. You quit waiting for some extraordinary person or event to make you "happy" and you begin to find that the "happy" state is within you - as long as you slow down and pay attention! And with the realization that everything you need to be happy is within you, you have a new-found confidence...and from that confidence, purpose and intention fill your life!

Move Over, Please!

We all like to have our "space" and plenty of room to move around, place our bags, spread out our props, etc.  Sometimes, though, a class gets so full that it's just not feasible.  In an effort to accommodate everyone, please store your mat bags, purses, etc. on the wire racks in the prop room, neatly stack your props behind your mat and move over to make room for students arriving after you.  This will help to reduce any disruptions or distractions to you and others in the class.

This was our most popular FaceBook post in August!
