#Wintervegie Challenge
We love the submissions we’re receiving for this year’s Yates Junior Landcare Challenge and we hope you’re enjoying getting into the garden and learning how food grows.
Remember when taking your photos to consider what stage of your winter vegie growing journey you are on and how the photo you take ties in with your story. Light is most important, your winter vegies will look better at different times of the day. Most importantly, don’t forget to include your competition planter stake in the photo!
Check out the great entry from Giles (pictured above) that placed him as July’s individual winner. "Last year none of my plants grew. This year I tried again. We planted the spinach seeds in the soil, watered them with worm wee and after a few weeks they started to grow. The plants are now big enough to eat; it tastes better than lettuce in salads!"
Spring is around the corner and soon enough it will be time to harvest your vegies! Keep an eye out for the August Challenge Update and we’ll share with you some great tips to help enhance your enjoyment when it comes to plucking out your vegies from the ground and eating them.

From Farm to Fork
Supporting our farmers and kids
“From Farm to Fork”, an initiative of Landcare Australia, is a fundraising campaign to encourage us all to get together and enjoy Australian food, while supporting the famers that make it possible. If we want to be able to enjoy the same supply of fresh food that we have, farmers need our support.
Your involvement will help raise awareness about where our food comes from through Junior Landcare programs. The funds will enable us to develop resources for the Australian school curriculum to educate kids about our food. We will also provide grants for disadvantaged schools to start their own vegetable garden or have access to a special program called “From Paddock to Plate” developed by Louise Fitzroy (one of our ambassadors) through Junior Landcare.
Imagine, your impact will teach both adults and kids understand more about where our food comes from and learn about the importance of a healthy environment in a hands-on way!

Spirit of Broo
An environmental musical in a wonderfully illustrated storybook, “Spirit of Broo” is an e-book for the whole family to sing along to. Broo takes its readers on a journey through the animal’s eyes as he leads his fellow bush buddies to execute their defence against the greed of the villain Sydney Downe.
Accompanied by an eight track CD, this story takes an honest look at the impact of urban sprawl and the toll taken on wildlife. James Palmer wrote this story to educate youngsters and create a generational shift of attitudes towards biodiversity and the wider environment they call home.
For each “Spirit of Broo” purchased, for $25, $5 will be donated to Landcare Australia towards environmental initiatives to protect and restore habitats and safeguard Australian species.
James is available for readings and singings of his book. While based in Perth, Western Australia he has been praised for the interactive nature of his school readings. Readings further afield from Perth can be arranged.
