NGIWA/LIAWA State Conference
Over 80 delegates from the nursery and garden, and landscape industries attended our inaugural joint NGIWA/LIAWA State Conference, networking drinks and landscape tour last month.
It was a day filled with interesting and relevant speakers including Jess Miller (from Sydney based Republic For Everyone) who updated us all on 202020 Vision; a fly through on urban renewal projects in Perth presented by MRA Executive Director of Planning, Ryan Keys; Dr Paul Barber of Arbor Carbon who spoke about sourcing, monitoring and managing healthy trees; designing healthy gardens for both residential (presented by AIH representative Toni Salter) and commercial applications (presented by Steven Wells of Austin Health based in Melbourne) just to name a few.  Other topics of interest included WorkSafe updates and safety trends, biosecurity, marketing, technology and merchandising.  It was the ideal platform for panel discussions with growers, landscapers and  landscape architects.

The day long conference concluded with networking drinks held in the main bar of Ascot Quays - where guests let their hair down and relaxed with industry friends and colleagues.  A bus tour of the gardens at the Fiona Stanley Hospital followed the next morning.

If you attended and would like to provide us with your feedback on the conference, networking drinks and/or landscape tour please download  form here.

There will be a launch of Waterwise Specialist programs today (August 20th) at Water Corporation and we have been advised that there will be updates to logos.  We would suggest you hold off any printing that includes the Waterwise logo for the moment until the new logo designs have been released.

Also, the endorsement and re-endorsement of WWGC will be conducted in-house by Water Corporation in the future. You will be visited by friendly Water Corporation Community Engagement Officers. We will update you with details soon.

RETAILERS: Taste It! (Involving the customer)

Consultant, John Stanley visited a small nursery in South Africa and shares his extremely positive retail experience involving tasting one of the plants. Why create a tasting station?

  • Many home owners are looking for an essential herb collection to enhance their meals
  • There is value in sharing food as a means of engaging the consumer
  • The herb tasting creates a “halo” effect. Once you have included the consumer in the experience they are likely to become more loyal to your business and talk to their friends about the experience.

Stay Smart Online - are you protected?
In the past year, over 30% of small businesses have experienced a cybersecurity incident and in 2013 cybercrime was responsible for Australian businesses losing more than $1 billion.  Online criminals actively target smaller businesses because it is generally easier to gain access to their systems.
Stay Smart Online (SSO) is the Federal Department of Communication's online safety and security website and is designed to help you understand the risks and the simple steps you and your staff can take to protect your personal and financial information online.  This service is free for Australian internet users.  It explains recent online threats and how they can be managed.
