Apology Offered for Destruction of Historic African American Neighborhood


On July 17, Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman joined members of the African American community in a ceremony to remember, reconcile and restore feelings of loss and anger over the destruction 50 years ago of the historic Rondo neighborhood to make way for the interstate highway.

Mayor Coleman delivered a formal apology for the destruction of the Rondo neighborhood, acknowledging the pattern of structural racism evident in the decision to route Interstate 94 through the neighborhood in the name of “urban renewal.”

The Job Assistance Ordinance: Expanding Opportunity for Workers in Seattle


Having a criminal background can be a major barrier in accessing employment. A recent ordinance in the City of Seattle places limits on how employers can use conviction and arrest records for jobs within Seattle city limits. The Ordinance aims to increase employment opportunities, which will reduce recidivism, address impacts resulting from racial disparities within the criminal justice system and strengthen the community.

Saint Paul Public Library creates resource listings on race

The Saint Paul Public Library, whose entire staff went through the City’s Foundations of Racial Equity training in May, has created an online list of books, poems, articles, films, blog posts, and other resources exploring race in the United States. The Library is building the resource list using a crowd-sourcing approach, started first by asking Library staff for contributions, but designed to grow over time with suggestions from others.
