AUGUST 10 - AUGUST 15

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS WEEK

1. SA Clubhouse on the Move

The Clubhouse will be changing a lot as we are prepare to move from Recoleta Rd to Citizens Pkwy. Many hands are needed to organize, pack, clean, and inventory all of the Clubhouse property. What a wonderful way to work on your mental health while helping get the Clubhouse moved over. Join the Let’s Get Moving Committee Mondays @12:30 PM to learn how you can be a help to the moving team!

2. San Antonio Career Fair

On Thursday, August 13th, the SA Clubhouse will be attending the San Antonio Career Fair. We will meet with possible employers and TE partners. Bring your resumes, cover letters, and business cards! The group will leave in a van right after lunch and return by 1:30 PM. See Kyler for more information!

3. Clubhouse Workforce Committee

Join us at our next meeting as we review our task board to ensure that it will help us achieve our monthly goals.

4. Ride-A-Mile with the Clubhouse

Why walk a mile, when you can bike a mile. Join us Tuesday Aug. 11, 4:30 P.M. as we gear up and ride our bikes though Hardberger park. While on the trail, you might see wild animals like deer and birds.  See Andrew for more information!

5. Volunteer at the Humane Society

Join us as we walk and care for animals at The San Antonio Humane Society. We will be leaving the Clubhouse around 10:00 AM and return by 2:00 PM. See Andrew for more information.

PET THERAPY

V. Marquez

For those of us with anxiety or depression, it's often hard to get by. You don't want to get out of bed or get active 'cause you're scared, unsure of what is to come. What can help is owning a pet!

Cats or dogs do wonders for deep depression or anxious habits. For one thing, there is an uncomplicated relationship between pet and owner, where you don't have to worry too much about hurting your pet's feelings. And unlike some families, where relationships can fray, your pet won't outright criticize you or put you down.

The responsibility of owning a pet may be hard, but it adds a new positive focus to your life. It gives you a sense of value and self-importance. It reminds us that we are indeed capable and that we can do so much more than what we think. Also, the act of walking your pet is as good for your heart as the dog's.  Walks give a sense of routine, and when the pet is the one urging you to get up and balance to your schedule, a true companionship builds between you.

And you may think you're alone, but your pet can be your greatest friend. A simple touch gives a bond which relaxes your mind and centers you on oneself. Another fact: petting a dog can lower your heart rate. Petting can be also be a bridge of social interaction when meeting others with dogs of their own.

Owning a dog does wonders for better health, lower blood pressure, and reduced stress. Not to mention that feel good attitude! And think of this: owning a dog can reduce the need to see a doctor because of all the health benefits. So ask yourself: is owning a cat or dog worth it for you?

I'd think so.

REVIEWING ANT-MAN

V. Marquez and J. Benavides

We've heard of Marvel classics such as Spiderman, the Avengers, and X-Men, but apparently one had been left out: itty-bitty Ant-Man (Jul '15) has finally hit the big screen. Despite his size, his "smallness doesn't take the size out of the fight," as Jacob so eloquently put it after our viewing the movie Tuesday evening. The quality of the movie is nothing to sneeze at, either, with CGI effects very well played and a real highlight of the action film. The plot itself is something that kept the both of us listening and wondering what would be next for our little Ant-Man.

Will there be a sequel? And will it be this year or next? Whatever the answers, Ant-Man seems to be the kind of movie you can look forward to for action and plenty of offhanded humor!

HOUSE MEETING

1. Let's discuss our Working to End the Stigma Walk and Rally, Monday September 7 (Labor Day) Submitted by the Development Unit

This Labor Day, we'll be celebrating employment and fighting the stigma at a walk and rally at Olmos Basin Park, right off of Devine near the sports fields. In order to make this event happen, we'll be contracting all the other units to help in the planning and execution.  We'll be handing duties out to each of the units over the next few weeks. Stay tuned.

We'll also be organizing a massive telephone outreach campaign over the next month to announce and spread the word about the event. Each unit will be responsible for about 200 calls, so be prepared to add this to your special projects.

2. Can members donate a non-perishable items like rice, pasta, canned food, mixes, etc. to the Food Pantry once a month or so? (Submitted by Eva)

Sounds like a great idea, and the Clubhouse always appreciates donations to our pantry!

3. Can we consider adding expenses from the Food Pantry on the budget next year since we're a registered Food Bank partner? (Submitted by Eva)

The Food Pantry has always been ancillary to our core mission at the San Antonio Clubhouse. That being said, we do have it for a reason, and we always appreciate donations to the Pantry. We probably will not be able to budget for it, especially as it has become something as much for the outside community as it is for our own Clubhouse members, but the Development Unit has committed to looking into budget options for the Food Pantry next year.
