Welcome to the newsletter for August.

While many people are heading off for the holidays, we look at how it is cycling to school in the region, as well as taking time to catch up with infrastructure plans for Jesmond, current support for Space for Cycling in Newcastle after May's local elections, and opinions on cycling in Newcastle from our chief councillors.

Upcoming dates for the diary include:
  • 5 September City Centre Infrastructure Safari Walk – After cycling the seven SCRs, we’re turning our attention to the city centre. Meet outside Central Station at 10:00am, and we'll be walking around the city centre to explore the use of roads and public spaces. Join us for all or parts of it, or meet us afterwards for a coffee near the Civic Centre.
Keep on pedalling!

Safe Cycling To Schools

Campaign Chair, Katja Leyendecker, and Chair for Jesmond, Sally Watson, were recently interviewed by Andy Sixsmith for Made in Tyne & Wear television about how it is cycling to school in Newcastle; click here to read the main article. There is also a connected article on road.cc, quoting Newcastle Cycling Campaign, about the verbal and physical abuse some parents in Newcastle experience while cycling with their children to school.

Our Replies — Jesmond

We respond to the infrastructure plans by Newcastle City Council for parts of Jesmond. See the articles on Jesmond Dene Road and Osborne Road for details of the council's plans in addition to our comments and replies to them.

Policitians' Statements

We look back at a reminder of what the chief city councillors for Newcastle have said about cycling in Newcastle over the years. Click to see quotes from Cllr Nick Forbes and Cllr Ged Bell.

Space For Cycling — Local Support

As part of the nationwide initiative, Space for Cycling, which we are part of, we have updated the ward map of support for the campaign here following May's local elections in Newcastle. Also available to download is a spreadsheet showing exactly which Newcastle councillors have signed up (or not, as it may be) - with 60% of councillors now offering their support. If your ward councillors haven't signed up, please get in touch with them here.
