ANNOUNCING BEVISIBLE & BLACK MBA WOMEN AS PIPELINE FELLOWSHIP RECRUITMENT AMBASSADORS

Pipeline Fellowship engages BeVisible & Black MBA Women as Recruitment Ambassadors for Black women & Latinas
August 10, 2015 — Since the launch of Pipeline Fellowship, an angel investing bootcamp for women, in April 2011, the percentage of women angel investors in the United States has grown from 12% to 26%, according to the Center for Venture Research. However, the percentage of minority angels in the U.S. has inched from 4% to 8%.

When it comes to women of color angels, the numbers are even lower. Additionally, the percentage of women of color entrepreneurs pitching to and securing funding from angel investors in the United States is less than 24% and 16%, respectively.

And yet, the number of businesses owned by minority women has increased from one in six in 1997 to one in three in 2015, per the “2015 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report” commissioned by American Express OPEN. While non-minority (term used in report) women-owned firms grew 40% over the eighteen-year time period, Black women-owned firms grew 322% and Latina-owned firms grew 224% in the same time period.

“We need to bet on Black women and Latinas. There are enough white guys investing in other white guys--let’s get more of us investing in more of us,” remarked Natalia Oberti Noguera, Founder & CEO of Pipeline Fellowship.

To this end, Pipeline Fellowship has engaged BeVisible & Black MBA Women as Recruitment Ambassadors for Black women & Latinas. Both organizations will provide US$1k scholarships to Black women and Latinas who sign on to Pipeline Fellowship’s angel investing bootcamp.

“We simply have to do a better job in supporting Black women leaders by taking an active role in their development,” said Daria Burke, Founder of Black MBA Women.

For BeVisible Co-Founder Andrea Guendelman, “Relationships and access to capital are the biggest roadblocks for Latina entrepreneurs. However, it doesn’t have to stay this way. And, one way to make sure it doesn’t is to train Latinas to become investors.”

“As an LGBTQ Latina entrepreneur,” added Oberti Noguera, “I'm committed to engaging underrepresented voices and am thrilled to be collaborating with BeVisible and Black MBA Women to activate more Black women and Latina angels.”

APPLICATION PROCESS

Pipeline Fellowship, an angel investing bootcamp for women (cis and trans women welcome!), has opened a call for applications for its fall 2015 programs in Albuquerque, Boulder, Denver, LA, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego, Seattle, SF, Silicon Valley, and Vegas.

Black women and Latinas are encouraged to apply before Monday, August 31, 2015: http://pfapply.seamlessdocs.com/f/bootcamp

In order to be eligible for a US$1k scholarship, candidates need to self-identify as Black and/or Latina, as well as mention BeVisible or Black MBA Women in their application.

Pipeline Fellowship's three main criteria are:

a) Meeting one of the accredited investor definitions (i.e., US$200K in income or US$300K joint income with spouse for the past two years, or US$1M net worth)

b) Interest in group learning model

c) Passion for philanthropy and/or social change

For most Pipeline Fellows, this is their first angel investment. They're attracted by the program's three components (education, mentoring, practice) and benefit from the diversity of each cohort. Pipeline Fellows are intergenerational (ranging from late twenties to 60+) and come from a variety of professional backgrounds.

The Pipeline Fellowship is an invaluable experience. This program equips its participants with an essential angel investor toolkit while also providing access to a network of engaging philanthropists. I have gained savvy and insightful business partners, as well as lifelong friendships, remarked Pipeline Fellowship alumna Simone Castillo.
