Greetings!

The clock is ticking. Kids and teachers and parents are all counting the days and hours until school begins again.

It's a great time to plan a “Back to School” party for the seniors you serve.

Here are some activity suggestions, discussion starters, a lyric sheet and a link to a cute YouTube of the song “School Days”, and the words to the well known poem “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten."

Enjoy!
Mary Sue

Back to School Party
Decorations and goodies
  • Print out banners from local schools, colleges etc. to hang
  • Put mini chalkboards, chalk, lined paper, pencils, rulers etc on the table as party favors
  • Invite people to bring any pictures they may have of themselves in school. Display them on a table. (Family members may be able to help you with this if you ask them ahead of time.)
Music
  • Download or show the YouTube of the song “School Days”
  • Print the lyrics and sing “School Days” – see below for a PDF you can print and hand out.
 Discussion Starters:
  • Did anyone go to a one room school? What was that like? Would you recommend it?
  • What was your favorite subject in school?
  • Did you have a favorite teacher or someone who inspired you? Tell us about them.
  • What was your school like? Was it big or small?
  • Do you have any lifelong friends that you met in school?
  • Did you meet your wife or husband in school?
  • How did you get to school?
  • Were there school bells to tell you when school started?
  • Did you go home for lunch or carry your lunch to school?
  • Did you ever work as a teacher?
  • Did you ever give an apple to your teacher?
  • Have you ever gone to a high school reunion?
  • What games did you play at recess?
 Activities:
Many of these suggestions come from Elder Song’s books “Roses in December” and “Down Memory Lane”.
