Vanity Everything is Vanity

“For he sees wise men die; Likewise the fool and the senseless person perish, And leave their wealth to others.  Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever, Their dwelling places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names. Nevertheless man, though in honor, does not remain; He is like the beasts that perish.” Psalm 49:10-12 NKJV

Two weeks ago we were blessed to attend Tuesday morning bible  study with the saints at Faith Lutheran Church in Denver. Pastor Neustel was going through Psalms with his group and we read through this passage above and also in Song of Solomon about vanity. Jenn, over the years, has learned to quilt and has made some nice quilts for our family. As a military familly we’ve also collected many “things” on our travels. One of our biggest challenges is to take 20 years of accumulated family stuff (plus the 20+ years before we married) and decide what to take, what to store and what to give away or toss. Here in the West we live in a very “stuff” oriented  society and we are attached to our treasures. This bible study, while we were in the middle of our homelessness and stufflessness was very appropriate! You can’t take it with you! While there is certainly value in having nice things, in giving them to our children when we are gone it is truly a blessing to be reminded in this scripture that our hope is in our Lord, in his Death and Resurrection, not in our stuff, no matter how nice, hard won, or long in the family. It is all just stuff and it will fade. We are excited to be so regularly reminded of this in our interactions with all these wonderful congregations. People are truly supportive of the work John has been appointed to do and so wonderfully welcoming of our family as we learn to live a different way and build our support network!  Thank-you all for your continuedprayers and support and Thank-you Pastor Neustel for the timely bible study and reminder!
