2016 DECLARED HOLY YEAR by Pope Francis

Earlier this year, Pope Francis announced 2016 will be an extraordinary Holy Year for pilgrims heading to the following destinations: Rome - Italy, Santiago de Compostela - Spain, Ars - France, and Quebec - Canada.
More about these pilgrimages . . .

Pope Francis  in Rome declared 2016 Holy Year

Holy years, also known as Jubilee years, usually take place every 25 years, unless the Pope requests an extraordinary Holy Year to highlight a particular issue or topic, like in this case. The main focus on the Holy Year 2016 will be ‘Mercy’.

The 2016 Holy Year of Mercy will be officially starting on 8th December 2015 and finishing on 20th November 2016.

What does this mean?

A Holy Year will mean the Vatican will be hosting religious festivities throughout the year and millions of pilgrims will be arriving in Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Ars, and Quebec.

The entrance to St Peter’s Basilica known as the ‘Holy Door’, as well as ‘Holy Doors’ to other cathedrals in Rome, will be opened for pilgrims this year.

The 'Via Francigena' is an ancient Pilgrim Trail

If you are planning a pilgrimage, to any of the destinations mentioned above, whether walking or cycling the Via Francigena or St Francis Way during the 2016 Holy Year, talk to the FrancigenaWays.com specialists as soon as you have your dates.
If you're planning to walk to Santiago de Compostela – please expect increased volumes of pilgrims and contact the CSJOFSA if you have queries.

Compostela Register web page

All members who have obtained their Compostela this year or any time before can   email your certificate to Darren Combrink darren34@gmail.com before you have it framed or filed away.  We keep a register of all our members who have obtained their Compostela since 2002.   The register can be viewed on the CSJofSA website.  If your Compostela is not there please contact Darren.
First names are placed in alphabetical order under the year you walked. To speed up the administration, when emailing or faxing you certificate, please supply your full name “in English”, and date you received your certificate and where in SA you live.  Also indicate if you walked or cycled.  This information will help a great deal – some of the Compostela certificates are extremely difficult to decipher.

All those who have walked please share your experiences with us and send ONLY 2 photos for our Website Gallery to the Webmaster. PLEASE NOTE this has NOTHING to do with the Calendar Competition.

Please use this email address camino@csjofsa.za.org  for all correspondence other than contact references above for specific functions or projects.

All those who are still walking this year – Buen Camino!

Adios,
Andrée Lombard
