Special Education Law Tips

This month's 2 Things that will help your child with school

Since we know that parents of special needs kids don't have a ton of spare time, our newsletter is designed to be short but sweet.  Enjoy these 2 Things and if you know someone who will also benefit from these tips, please feel free to pass it along.  Thank you from all of us at SchoolKidsLawyer.com!

Thing 1: What is a PWN?
PWN is an acronym which stands for 'Prior Written Notice.'  This is a very important phrase to know because it affects your child's status as a special education student.  A PWN is required any time the school proposes to initiate or change your child's eligibility for services, placement, or provision of a free appropriate public education; or if the school refuses to initiate or change those things.  A PWN must include (1) the action the school proposes or refuses; (2) an explanation for the action and the basis for it; (3) a statement that the parents have legal rights regarding the action (such as to challenge it); (4) other options the school considered and why they were rejected; and (5) factors relevant to the school's decision.  If you receive a PWN and have questions, contact our office!
Thing 2: The new school year
Fall time always brings a new school year.  This can be either extremely exciting or extremely daunting, especially for kids with special needs.  But there are some simple things you can do to make the school year start off right:
  1. Plan to meet with all of your child's teachers and any other staff members that will come in contact with your child, preferably before the first day of school.  Make sure each has a copy of your child's IEP.
  2. Using a school map and your child's schedule, walk through your child's day with him/her. This will make your child feel confident and safe.
  3. Make sure that transportation is set up and you have a contact person in the transportation department in case of changes.
