Tree Planting in the News
A reporter from the East and Bays Courier community newspaper dropped in to learn about the little avenue of fruit trees planted at school this month. (That's the reporter, Alastair Lynn, with the camera in the photo above.) The Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board is funding a “Fruit Trees for Schools†initiative which was used to supply our apple, pear and mandarin trees. Fresh, seasonal fruit growing will complement the vegetable growing that already forms part of our curriculum.
Alastair also interviews Shrada for the article we expect to be run in the newspaper soon.

All of faculties will be represented - Arts, Business, Creative Arts and Industries, Education and Social Work, Engineering, Medical and Health Sciences, Law and Science.

Uniforms: Ready to Order
The full list of uniform items is available from this link. As yet The Warehouse has to update the item codes so please use this list to check sizes at your nearest Warehouse, then place your order with the school before the end of next week to take part in the bulk-order, and to receive the 20% bulk-order discount! (Do not order tops directly on-line or throughthe Warehouse as without the new item codes, the tops will not come with the required school logo.) Parents wishing to join the bulk order can contact Mrs Hannah van Ballegooy with their order and payment: she will coordinate the bulk order.
We are excited to have our students going into uniform. Great times for Carey College!

Phonics a Key to Reading ...
and to treating Dyslexia!
A revealing book on dyslexia by visiting British author Professor Elliot highlights how the term ‘dyslexia’ has hindered efforts to help children with reading difficulties in New Zealand. Massey University's Professor Tom Nicholson, a leading literacy expert and member of the American Reading Hall of Fame, says: "The way we treat children with severe reading difficulties is a national tragedy. Professor Elliott, who is touring New Zealand and Australia, is leading the charge to do something about it.†Professor Elliott's solution requires excellent first teaching – with a strong phonics emphasis – followed by quick intervention if the child does not respond to teaching in the first few weeks of school. Read about his research here, or watch a video-clip from One News here.
