Once a respected landowner, Abd el-Aziz Gaafar is forced to move his family to Cairo to work at the Automobile Club. A place with horrible work conditions, Abd grows tired of unreliable work wages and physical abuse and when he stands up for himself it ultimately results in his death. His eldest son takes his father's post in the storeroom to take care of the family (while dabbling in Egypt's dangerous politics), while the younger brothers get in trouble and their sister struggles between her dream career or settling down as a wife to save her family. With tension building in the club, the workers (and the surround community) must decide if they want to live safely or fight for their rights.

Inspired by the traditional Yiddish folk song "Hob Ikh Mir a Manti" ("I Had a Little Coat"), Maya's Blanket shows the love between grandmother and grandchild. Maya's grandmother stitches Maya a blanket as a young girl, but as she grows older the blanket frays and is turned into many things, including a dress, scarf, a ribbon and finally a bookmark. When Maya's bookmark is the last to go, she preserves her memories by creating a book that showed her love for these items, and shares them with her own daughter.
