WELCOMING STATEMENT DISCUSSION
MONDAY, AUGUST 24, 6PM
@ PECADO BUENO

To join the Reconciling in Christ (Lutheran) and Integrity (Episcopal) congregations that publicly welcome LGBTQ folks into community, we would need to submit a formal Welcome Statement.

There have been preliminary discussions about having a welcoming statement that is expansive to welcome marginalized folks *and* is specific to welcome LGBTQ folks. Specific because, historically, the church has been terrible at welcoming LGBTQ folks. Specific because of search-ability: thinking about if/how COTA is searchable as open and affirming.

To continue this discussion thread and invite others in, Julie McDonald is hosting a welcoming statement discussion on Monday, August 24, 6pm, at Pecado Bueno (across the street from the Abbey).

To set a framework for our discussion(s), we'll use this toolkit: http://www.welcomingresources.org/welcomingtoolkit.pdf

Please RSVP to julie.d.mcdonald_at_gmail.com so we have a table space that suits!
HELP SEND LACEY & APRIL
TO THE VENICE COLLOQUIUM!

COTA's Worship & Music Director, Lacey Brown, along with long-time liturgist and former Sacristan, April Caballero, have been invited to attend a unique gathering in Venice, Italy, along with other Christian creatives from around the world.

This gathering, also known as the "Venice Colloquium," is by invitation only, and will be held Guidecca, the quiet island just south of central Venice. Participants will stay at the renovated cloisters of the convent attached to the beautiful Palladian Church of the Redentore.

The Venice Colloquium will gather to explore and envision new approaches and possibilities for worship, formation and proclamation.

This opportunity is being provided at a very reasonable cost, however, Lacey and April could use financial assistance to help with travel expenses. Please consider supporting this opportunity to send these COTAns off to Italy for this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

To learn more about the Venice Colloquium, Lacey & April, or to make a contribution, visit http://apostleschurch.org/venice.

BONUS: Four original Psalm refrains & reflections are being created in support of this project. At the end of the fundraiser (September 1st), donors will recieve a link to download all four refrains, as well as PDFs with lead sheets and reflections for each Psalm.

COMMUNITY SPACE IS STARTING UP AGAIN THIS FALL!

Community Space are small groups of COTAns who meet regularly in order to be known, discover a compassionate reading of scripture, and love each other, God, and ourselves more deeply. Community Space was conceived as an expansion of Open Space â€“ a space to pause and reflect on all that we have seen and heard, but corporately rather than individually. Its purpose is to draw the COTA community together in a more intentional and intimate way throughout the week.

Groups of 5-10 people meet weekly for 3-month periods in a participant's home.

If you are interested in being part of Community Space, please complete the survey here or if you would just like to know more, contact Natalia at ok.ca.md.tx@gmail.com.
FALL FAMILY MEAL HOSTS NEEDED

Would you like to host a few COTAns in your home for a meal this September or October? We're organizing family meals for COTAns to gather in one another's homes to build community.

Please email kelly.caver@gmail.com with your date(s), how many guests you can host, and what neighborhood you live in. Sign-ups for dinner guests will begin once we have enough hosts.
COMMUNITY NEWS & EVENTS
COMMUNITY DINNERS IN FREMONT
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED

For the month of August we would like to commit as a community to providing food for hungry people in Fremont on Wednesday evenings. Normally, there would have been a meal hosted by Community Dinners at the Doric Lodge in downtown Fremont. Luke Warner, who just moved to Belize with Christina, was the host of this service. Instead of not having food available during August for those who have come to depend and rely on it, we would like to fill the gap at least for this month and forge some new relationships.

If you are willing, we need a few volunteers for each Wednesday to prepare or purchase food for about 50 people, put them in to-go containers, and hand them out along with something to drink. Although the Doric Lodge will be closed, we will stand in front of those doors on the sidewalk since that is where people have been accustomed to coming for food.

If you have any other questions or comments, please reach out to me by email at ivar@apostleschurch.org or 310-902-7365.

VESPERS - WED, SEPT 02, 6:30PM
@ GEORGE: CENTER FOR COMMUNITY
(2212 NE 125th St / 98125 - Lake City)

Vespers is the ancient practice of praying at the setting of the sun. Our adaptation attempts to create space in the middle of the week to recenter ourselves and reconnect to the source that gives us life, meaning, and purpose. Regardless of religious preference or belief in the divine, you are welcome here.

Our September gathering will consider the labor of our lives: As we approach the Fall, and enter back into rhythms which may not include quite as many adventures as the Summer months, we take a moment to examine our intentions, and ask for blessing on all that we work for and strive toward. No matter your vocation, or how you may feel about it, there is space for you.

Vespers is held at George on first Wednesdays at 6:30pm.

Future Vespers:
October 7: on Saint Francis
November 4: on the Departed
December 2: on Advent(ure)

ABBEY ARTS NEWS & EVENTS

Praised for their “sincere lyrics, sparse arrangements and haunting harmonies,”¹ the dynamic duo, Lauren and Daniel Goans, are traveling to Seattle to perform at Fremont Abbey on September 11. Lowland Hum is the whirlwind of 2014 in an album. Their songs, originally composed of just a acoustic guitar and their voices, have since blossomed to “ambien[t] heavy tracks… becoming more complex and intricate… as they evolve, almost like aural spider webs.”²
