Awesome Awareness Week
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make Awareness Week 2015 a success. It was so good to see all the volunteers supporting our cause. Of course the high-profile stories that came out of the Week helped too like the amazing CF sisters who undertook 65 days of good deeds and also Alana Taylor who captured the public's attention in the lead up to Awareness Week with her double lung transplant. There were also some nice local stories, many of which can be found on our Facebook page.
CFNZ issued a press release during the week as well to express our concern about the lack of funding for new medicine.

Chairpersons' Conference

We are now gearing up for the Chairperson's Conference which will be held in Christchurch in September, and some of the items on the agenda include communication, grants and fundraising, privacy issues, the draft welfare policy, and sustainable funding for CFNZ. The CFNZ Annual General Meeting will be held at 4.30pm on Saturday 12 September. There are no new nominations for the CFNZ Board so it will remain the same for the coming year: Jane Drumm (Chair), Margaret Nicholls, John Parsons, Kim McGuinness, and Cheryl Moffat.

CF Charity Auction brings in the big bucks!

Our inaugural CF Charity Auction in Christchurch last Friday was a great night and a wonderful result for CFNZ - $15,000 was raised. Some of the interesting items which went up for Auction included an All Blacks poster book signed by the 2011 World Cup team which went for over $700, and an $800 bottle of Royal Dragon vodka which is infused with edible gold leaves. The balloons were a great idea - if you bought one for $25, $50 or $100 you would get a prize guaranteed to be worth more than the balloon - they all sold out in 12 minutes. We are extremely grateful to Quality Hotel Elms for offering to host the event.
Sophie's Second to None!
Last week we also heard the cool story about Sophie who is six and lives in East Otago. She came 2nd in the Year One inter-school cross country event. There were seven schools competing so it's quite a feat.

Travel Insurance

While CFNZ hasn't yet secured travel insurance for PWCF, we have heard of two companies that have covered some with CF - ANZ Bank and Countdown Insurance - although Countdown apparently doesn't cover CF in USA, Canada or China but does in Australia and the UK where New Zealand has a reciprocal health agreement anyway.

Entertainment Books

Entertainment Books are offering free post on the Books during the month of August. Please visit our website for links to the branches selling the Books.

Raffle Tickets

The CFNZ Raffle closes on 31 August. Good luck to everyone who bought tickets. Please send the ticket stubs back to National Office, PO Box 8241, Christchurch 8440, in time for the draw on 3 September. It would be helpful if the money is banked straight into the Cystic Fibrosis Association of New Zealand bank account: 12-3147-0230576-00, using the reference "Raffle" and your surname.

Bounce for CF
It was the first time that CFNZ held the Bounce for CF event and it truly was a hit with everyone from the children, to the preschool education teachers and the staff at Uptown Bounce in Auckland. It was a great start to Awareness Week so thanks again to Choice Hotels for sponsoring it. Uptown Bounce now want to offer a 20 percent discount to children with CF who are keen to give the tramplines a go. Phone 09 378 1839 or email info@uptownbounce.co.nz to arrange a discount bounce.

Text-to-Donate

CFNZ has registered a txt2give programme with Vodafone.
People can now text the keyword CFNZ to 7003 to donate $3. The cost to be available for all telephone networks is $5,000, therefore CFNZ is currently only registered with Vodafone. This is a modest cost of $300. Before CFNZ invest $5,000 into an untried scheme we have decided to trial with Vodafone for a one-year period. The long-term aim will be to make it available to all branches if the txt2give proves successful. One of the disadvantages of the scheme is that it is impossible to tell where the donations come from - therefore any donations will be divided in the following way:
First three months all proceeds go to the Auckland Branch. This branch gave text-to-donate cards out during their street appeal in Awareness Week.
From November to mid-January all proceeds go to the Wellington Branch. This branch will give out the text cards at Wellington Airport for their Christmas Tree Festival.
From mid-Jan to mid-March all proceeds go to the National Office. The staff will give out the text-to-donate cards during Challenge Wanaka.
The scheme will be reviewed in March 2016.  More information will be available at the Chairs Conference.
