Memoir Poetry can be a powerful tool of self-expression for children. It helps them introspect, look back at their own lives with fresh eyes and in writing a memoir poem, a child often forms a closer acquaintance with his sense of self.  Keeping this as the basic premise, through the workshop’s exercises, children will acquire the necessary tools and techniques for writing in a more literary style. Literary style can be defined as the author's word choice, sentence structure, figurative language, and sentence arrangement which work together to establish mood, images, and meaning in the text.

Title: Writing styles and techniques in modern poetry

Time: 2pm - 6pm

In this workshop, participants will acquire techniques for writing modern poetry. Through a number of hands-on exercises and an actual session of writing, participants will be able to familiarise themselves with a range of writing styles and techniques spanning from T S Eliot who in effect started the modern movement in the 1920s to Maya Angelou who passed away as recently as in 2014. Literary techniques would include looking at the poets’ choice of imagery, development of plot, use of poetic diction and stanzaic form which lend structure and contribute to the mood of the piece.
