The Community Based Strategic Plan is nearing completion, and the Town of Collingwood thanks everyone who took the time to be a part of the process. There were more than 700 questionnaires completed, and hundreds of people stopped by one of our community booths or took part in a visioning session or the action items workshop.

The consultant, MMM Group, will be presenting the draft CBSP to the Strategic Initiatives Standing Committee on Thursday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m. (Third floor, Collingwood Public Library) and everyone is welcome to attend to see the result of the community's input.

The final CBSP will be presented at the Council meeting on September 21, and from there, staff will use the goals, objectives and priorities set out within the document to draft their 2016 and beyond work plans and departmental budgets.

If you have any questions about the CBSP, please feel free to contact us at jmays@collingwood.ca or 705-445-1030 Ext. 3293.

Construction Updates

The reconstruction of both Hume Street and Highway 26 West continues to go well. Hwy 26 West is expected to be completed by October, and Hume Street will be mostly completed by November.

Highway 26 West, (from 280m west of Princeton Shores Boulevard to Harbour Street), was identified as being in need of surface rehabilitation. It's also a key area where improvements to the transportation network are required to improve traffic operations and safety associated with left hand turning movements. The stretch of road carries a very high volume of provincially significant traffic and, as such, is a high priority for Engineering Services.

Weekly updates for both projects are posted online at http://www.collingwood.ca/construction_updates.

Summer Send-Off!

To send-off summer in style, the Town of Collingwood is hosting a great event at the new Shipyards Amphitheatre stage on September 17 and 18.

If you missed some of the great celebrations this summer, this is your chance to see them again! The Summer Send-Off will feature an encore of our inaugural Live & Original music feature hosted during the Elvis festival in July. It will also feature a repetition of the AT SEA curated exhibit that was projected onto the Terminal buildings during Sidelaunch Days. Part One of the AT SEA exhibit was displayed on August 1, however Part Two (a video presentation) had to be postponed due to a storm that came through on the evening of August 2.

Live & Original Encore

Thursday, September 17, 2015 – 8:00 p.m.  |  Harbourview Amphitheatre

Featuring our winner, Gina Horswood, and finalists Ian Raeburn, Bernadette Connors and James Stephens. Presented by Corus Entertainment (The Peak 95.1FM, B101, and Fresh Radio 93.1FM)

**This is NOT a competition, but rather a showcase of some of the talent that graced our Simcoe Street stage during the competition held during the Elvis Festival

AT SEA – Sidelaunch II

Friday, September 18, 2015 - 9:00 p.m.  |  Millennium Park (projection on the north side of the Terminal buildings)

Featuring the installation produced by independent curator Yasmin Nurming-Por. Part One will begin at 9:00 p.m. (subject to sunset and enough darkness to provide the best quality projection) followed by Part Two (video presentation). The two features will be repeated once in this order. Bring your own chair or blanket

**The curator will be in attendance at the re-presentation of this exhibit.

Visit www.collingwood.ca/SummerSendOff for all the details!

Back to School

School will be back in session on Tuesday, September 8th, and motorists are reminded to pay attention on the roads.

Do not use cell phones or other devices while driving. Be courteous, attentive and obey the crossing guard, speed limits and community safety zones at all times.

Motorists MUST NOT proceed through the crosswalk until the children and the crossing guard have cleared the roadway. As a motorist, you MUST STOP before reaching a crosswalk when the crossing guard has their stop sign in an upright position.

As you head back to school, is your local crossing guard "Canada's Favourite Crossing Guard"? Nominate them in Parachute Canada's 2015 contest!

Tale of a Town

The Tale of a Town - Canada is a nationwide theatre and media initiative aiming to capture the collective community memory of Canada’s main streets, one story at a time.

The Tale of a Town is touring the country in their ‘Storymobile’ (a.k.a travel trailer-turned-mobile recording studio) and visiting small towns and big cities alike, collecting oral histories through interviews with independent business owners, local heroes, community stakeholders, and neighbourhood residents. This national venture will culminate in a multi-platform celebration of the country’s main street culture, in commemoration of Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017.

The Tale of a Town Storymobile will be located adjacent to the Collingwood Town Hall from September 15 – 19, to gather main street and community stories. These local stories will be digitally recorded and added to The Tale of a Town’s story portal (www.thetaleofatown.com).  The stories will also become part of a podcast about Collingwood that will be distributed through The Walrus Magazine online.

The Tale of a Town’s time in Collingwood will culminate in a community celebration on September 26, in Downtown Collingwood, when the podcast will be unveiled.

Community members are invited to join us at the ‘Storymobile’ and share their memories of our wonderful community.  No appointment is necessary, but there are opportunities for staff to join you off location at other times to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to become part of Collingwood’s collective memory.

Kicking off Culture Days

The Arts & Culture Awards will be presented on Friday, September 25 and the event will kick off the 2015 Culture Days weekend.

Mayor Sandra Cooper and Council will present the awards which were established in 2011 to recognize outstanding contribution to arts and culture in our community. The public submits nominations in the spring, in the categories of youth, organization, and adult. The submissions are then reviewed by a community jury, and recipients selected.

Visit www.collingwood.ca/Arts-Culture-Awards to see the full list of nominees!

The Awards event is the start of the annual Culture Days weekend which is a national event to provide Canadians with opportunities to participate in and appreciate all forms of arts and culture in their communities. Hundreds of cities and towns across Canada will celebrate Culture Days with thousands of free activities.

On Saturday, September 26 from 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. enjoy the 2nd annual Collingwood Art Crawl, a free, self-guided art walk featuring more than 100 artists at more than 20 venues with live music, samplings of food and beverage, and incredible art, all in downtown Collingwood. Extend your evening with a special pre-Crawl priz fixe menu at participating restaurants from 4:00 p.m.– 6:00 p.m. and post-Crawl festivities.

More free arts and culture activities are listed on our website at www.collingwood.ca/culturedays, or pick up a brochure at the Parks, Recreation & Culture Office, 55 Ste. Marie Street, 3rd floor.
