SETTING THE COURSE
SETTING OUR COURSE FOR 2020:
A Message from Dining for Women's Board of Directors
Over the past year, our Board has been listening to and reflecting on many points of view from our members, our volunteer leaders, committee members, and our staff. From this, a dream has emerged for the future of our organization, and we want to share it with you.

As DFW members and supporters, we know that you share our passion for improving the lives of women and girls around the world through gender equity and empowerment. No matter how far apart we live, or what our life experiences are, we are all connected in deep and meaningful ways because of our shared vision for what we want DFW to accomplish, and what it brings to each of us in terms of heartfelt connection with each other and the broader world. Why Is Giving Internationally Important?
By Beth Ellen Holimon | DFW Executive Director
Philanthropic reports tell the story that Americans are among the most generous in the world. Private giving exceeded $358 billion in 2014 with individuals giving 72%, foundations giving 14%, bequests 8% and corporations at 5%. The only category of giving to decline in 2014 was international giving, making it the third year in a row that giving has dropped in this category...Continue Reading »

Grantee Anouncement
New Grantees Selected for First Half of 2016

Equipping women in rural Mexico to farm a highly nutritious local grain crop; helping marginalized girls in Mumbai, India to complete their schooling; empowering Maasai women in Tanzania to protect their natural resources for themselves and future generations; and helping victims of human trafficking achieve justice and prosecute their traffickers. These are some of the objectives of the six featured programs that you...Continue Reading »

OUR SEPTEMBER FEATURED PROGRAM:
Peter C. Alderman Foundation
This month, your Dining for Women donations will support the Peter C. Alderman Foundation (PCAF). PCAF was founded in 2003 to honor the life of Peter Alderman, a 25-year-old who was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Peter's family wanted to help those who had survived terrorism but had no access to care.

PCAF's mission is to heal the emotional wounds of survivors of terrorism, torture and mass violence by training indigenous health workers and establishing trauma treatment systems in post-conflict countries around the globe. DFW's grant will address maternal depression and anxiety in post-conflict northern Uganda. Learn More »

3 Things You Need to Know about our Featured Program
In northern Uganda, the invisible wounds of war – depression, anxiety and PTSD – produce enormous suffering and keep as many as one in four childbearing women from functioning as individuals, mothers, and productive community members.
To date, more than 100,000 survivors of terrorism and mass violence have been treated by PCAF-trained personnel or in PCAF clinics.
In 2007, Barron's magazine named PCAF as one of the ten most effective small charities in America for its sustained, measurable impact on people's lives.

September Sustained Funding Program
One Heart World-Wide is our sustained funding grantee this month. Its' mission is to decrease maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in remote rural areas of the world.

As a sustained funding grantee, One Heart World-Wide will receive $20,000 per year over a three-year period (September 2015-2017). This grant will train community outreach providers to increase access to safe births in two remote rural areas of Nepal.

One Heart World-Wide was originally a DFW featured program grantee in July 2013. As per its funding agreement with DFW, One Heart submitted its final report last October in which it described the significant impact of DFW's grant.

Cucumber Mango Salad
Recipe and photo credit: Linda McElroy
We are visiting Uganda this month, and I have a fresh new take on a cucumber and mango salad. Persian traders introduced mangoes to Uganda way back in the 10th century! The spices in this dish are reflective of that cuisine as well. This would be a refreshing side dish to go along with any braised meat dish. I've also updated and tested the previously published East African Braised Chicken. View Recipe »

When War Meets Birth: Postpartum Depression and the Future of a Post-Conflict Generation
By Chris Worthy
The birth of a baby should be cause for joy and dreams of the future. But when the future is uncertain and the past is marred by violence and war, mothers who may be unable to care for themselves find that they are ill equipped to deal with the endless needs of a newborn.
While maternal mental disorders are a vulnerability for all women...Continue Reading »
