Sunrise Monthly SunLetter

September 4th, 2015: Gearing up for Fall Programming

Welcome to the belated August SunLetter! It is our pleasure to debut the new and improved Sunrise website, designed by the wonderful folks at The Tactile Group! Sunrise Summer Camp, JumpStart and High School WorkReady students had a ball this summer, enjoying lots of hands-on and experiential, educational and fun activities, trips and lessons. Our first summer running JumpStart was a hit - attendance was high as rising 9th graders got some great support preparing for high school, college and careers. Summer Camp students enjoyed many recreational activities, with literacy support in conjunction with the Free Library of Philadelphia's citywide Read by 4th Campaign, their hands-on "Simple Machines" Project Based Learning unit with visiting partners The Claymobile, The Hacktory, Drexel Department of Making + Doing, and the Franklin Institute's Traveling Science program as well as invention-based activities in the classrooms and art room. WorkReady students gained great life experience and discipline in their work sites spread throughout the city, and built on future planning in their weekly classes held at South Philly High. There was much inter-program collaboration, which we love to do. Now, we plan to roll out limited September programming amid the "budget freeze" in Harrisburg - see registration details below.

It's a Fact: Afterschool Programs Help Kids Nationwide Succeed in School and Life

Quality programs foster teamwork, encourage responsibility, and teach kids important skills that help boost their academic performance.

But even with overwhelming parent support, these programs are at risk of devastating cuts. Will you take two minutes to ask your Representative to support student success?

Thank you for your support of afterschool—10.2 million children and youth thank you, too!

Sunrise of Philadelphia's Youth Voice Radio Podcast students have finished Episode 7: The Music Episode! In this episode, students discussed different styles of music, and looked into how music impacts people.

Listen to Episode 7

Through the Sunrise Youth Voice Radio podcast, students have the opportunity to display, express, and inquire into the many things that affect young people living in Philadelphia today.
Sunrise Summer 21st Century STEAM Workshops for Middle Schoolers this year included Howard Tucker's World Rhythms Club, Coach Troy Holiday's Basketball Club, DJ Lorne Peart's DJ Club as well as the Motivos Zine Club with Motivos Magazine Founder, Jenee Chizick.
