A monthly taste of local food topics from around Michiana

Tickets still available – get them while you can!

From rural backyards to urban front yards, local “yardeners” are growing food at home to feed their families, be more self-sufficient, use resources more mindfully and create edible landscapes as beautiful as ornamental yards.

Now five families open their gardens to you!
Sunday, August 30, 10am-3pm:
Visit five gardens in southwest Berrien County Michigan

Hazelnut, fig and heirloom apple trees…..vegetables for preserving and green smoothies…..cold frames to extend the season…..flowers that protect or enhance the crops…..everything to make the most of their resources.  All this and much more can be found among the diverse array of gardens in the tour.

Michiana Family Named “Homesteaders of the Year”

Thanks to the Eby family for this photo. Pictured are Matt and Jennifer with their children (from left) Lauren, Henry and Katherine.

Congratulations to Michiana residents Matt and Jennifer Eby who were named one of Mother Earth News’ Homesteaders of the Year for 2015 in the magazine’s August/September issue! The couple and their three children have been farming and modeling sustainable living sustainably since 2008 and have lived in Cassopolis, MI since 2011. They describe their 36-acre farm as: “… a family owned, beyond organic, pasture based, local-market farm.” They raise sheep, chickens and cattle and the resulting products provide nearly 70% of the family’s income. They produce and sell homemade soap and body care products, as well as meat and eggs. The Ebys sell directly from their farm, online, at area farmers markets and craft shows. Matt’s off-farm construction work rounds out the family’s income.
