Zip-line in the media
The proposed zip-line for Kondalilla National Park continues to attract media interest and commentary. A recent article in the Hinterland Times quoted Sunshine Coast Environment Council’s Narelle McCarthy, “With just 5% of Queensland in national park estate, these special places must also be respected for the important role they play in conserving the region’s declining biodiversity and as refuges for threatened species.”

The ABC also published an article stating that the State Government was yet to clarify what type of ecotourism is acceptable in Queensland national parks.

A great 100th anniversary of Lamington National Park
NPAQ members were prominent among attendees of the recent Lamington National Park 100th birthday.
Romeo Lahey's daughter, Anne Neale, spoke extensively of her father's involvement of more than 50 years at O'Reillys Green Mountains. She reminded everyone that NPAQ was continuing to educate the public about the benefits of national parks, to be their watchdog, and to encourage visiting but decried large running events.
NPAQ Councillor, Peter Ogilvie, gave an hour-long presentation of the early history of Lamington and the lead role it played in the management of Queensland national parks for decades. NPAQ members also had a promotional marquee there to encourage people to learn about national parks and the work of NPAQ.
Many NPAQ members also wore their Natural History Association hats to attend a Ranger and QPWS staff reunion dinner on the Saturday night. Fortunately, many had joined Ranger-led walks at both locations following helpings of celebratory cakes, and yes, a few Lamingtons!
Everyone really appreciated a reproduction of a 64-page booklet about the national park featuring many pictures and a centre-spread panorama, published by the Queensland Government Intelligence and Tourist Bureau from about 1920.

Unfortunately, this Wednesday night’s Social Evening guest speaker from the Australian Antarctic Division is unavailable. But our replacement will be well-known NPAQ member and well-seasoned photographer, Stewart Parker, to talk speak about his 2010 trip to Antarctica.

The Living Rock: The Invention of Climbing in Eastern Australia by Michael Meadows.
This book is the first comprehensive account of the origins of rock climbing in Australia. It focuses on the activities of early European explorers, post-war climbing in Queensland, and the adventures of a small and enthusiastic core of climbers – some of whom were key and founding members of NPAQ – who created modern Australian rock climbing culture. Get involved and volunteer at NPAQ
Last year, more than 5,600 voluntary hours were contributed by over 100 volunteers to a range of tasks including monthly revegetation work, mail outs, assisting at events such as members meetings and organising or leading bushwalking activities.
Volunteers are a vital part of the NPAQ team. We are currently looking for volunteer writers and photographers to contribute to Protected magazine, bushwalking adventure presenters for Social and Topics of Interest Evenings, helpers for events such as the Annual Dinner, detailed workers for Data Entry, and leaders for our bushwalking Activities.
