3MT Competition @ AUT - Announcement of Finalists and Winners

Congratulations to Kudakwashe Tuwe (PhD candidate) and Samuel Paterson (Master of Sport and Exercise student), winners of the doctoral and Masters 3MT competitions!

Tuwe and Samuel were among the eleven students who aced the 3MT pre-heats to go through to the finals, held on Friday 21 August during the Postgraduate Research Symposium. The competition was chaired by Dr Andy Godfrey, alongside judges Dr Pedro Silva, Associate Professor Erica Hinckson, and 2014 3MT winner Stephanie-Anne Croft.

Tuwe is enrolled in the Faculty of Culture and Society and supervised by Associate Professor Camille Nakhid, Dr Carol Neill and Professor Ian Shirley. He gave a compelling presentation on the employment experiences of African communities in New Zealand. Tuwe impressed the judges with his magnetic stage presence, and the innovativeness of his storytelling methodology. Tuwe will represent AUT at the Trans-Tasman 3MT Doctoral Competition on 2 October at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.

Samuel is enrolled in his Masters within the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences under the supervision of Dr Travis McMaster and Professor John Cronin. He presented on the reliability and discriminative ability of badminton specific change of direction testing. The judges praised his ability to communicate complex scientific content in a clear and easily understandable way. Samuel will compete for AUT at the Masters 3MT Inter-University Challenge at the University of Auckland on 10 September.

Well done also to the runners up for competitions. Caroline Stretton came second in the doctoral competition for her talk "Finding the powerful why - walking for wellbeing after stroke." Toiroa Williams was the runner-up in the Masters competition (and also won the overall People's Choice award) for his presentation "Ōpōtiki su-PEER-heroes."

Thank you to the other 3MT finalists who also gave excellent talks on the day: Masters students Khine Thida, Amy Tielu and Blair Speakman, and doctoral candidates Thushini Jayawardena, Christine Clark, Shabnam Jalili-Moghaddam, and Lydia Harrell.

The winners received a $250 research award and a Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet, and the runners up received a $250 research award and $400 worth of Printsprint vouchers. Thanks to our sponsors who made the prizes possible: AUT ICT, Cyclone Computers, Printsprint and AUT Sport and Fitness Centres.

Well done everyone, and good luck Tuwe & Samuel as you compete against the winners from other universities!

AUT Library has recently acquired the SAGE Research Methods database. This database contains resources like ebooks, book chapters, journals, encyclopaedias, and dictionaries that focus on research methodologies.

For any help or questions, please contact your Liaison Librarian or utilize the tutorials within the database.

New Tool for Postgraduate Research Students - Researcher Development Report

Are you working towards a research degree?

AUT offers hundreds of support services and research-related events to help postgraduate students develop their skills. Whether you want to hear about the latest research in your field (or another field), learn how to start publishing articles, figure out a software package, or learn more about a particular methodology, you can probably do it right here at AUT.

A new online tool is available to help all AUT researchers – including postgraduate students – to search for workshops, seminars, one-on-one assistance, conferences, and resources relevant to their research. It’s called the Researcher Development online tool, and it brings information on research happenings all over the University into one place. You can search by date to see what’s on in the coming weeks, or by campus to see what’s on near you. You can even set up alerts so that relevant listings come straight to your inbox. Try the tool at the link above, and search for PG resources by selecting “Postgraduate students” in the “Tailored to:” field. From there, you can customise your search any way you like.

A copy of the QuickGuide can be found here, and you can contact the Researcher Development team (Project Leader Jennie Billot and Coordinator Anaise Irvine) if you would like a copy of the full User Guide.

New writing guides on SLC website

The Student Learning Centre – Puna Aronui (SLC) has two new handouts online that will assist you with postgraduate writing tasks, whether you are a coursework student or a research student.

Writing a research proposal” covers topics such as the structure of a proposal, project working title, introduction, initial literature review, methodology and methods, timeline, resources, and plenty more.

Writing an article for publication” addresses article purpose, selecting a journal, keyword selection, the use of figures and tables, avoiding common mistakes, dealing with peer reviewers’ feedback, and a number of other important issues.

Scholarships Newsletter

Check out the July - September Scholarships e-newsletter! This covers awards and scholarship we are aware of up until the end of November 2015. Please note that this is not to be taken as a fully comprehensive list as other awards are confirmed frequently. New scholarships are listed regularly in this database and currently well over 240 schemes are listed.
